Whatever It Takes (Matthew 9:1-8)

Faith trusts in Jesus’ authority to forgive sins and bring healing, and it presses through every obstacle to receive His gifts. Though the busyness and burdens of life may tempt us to neglect worship and His Word, Jesus invites the weary to find rest in His forgiveness, won through His death and resurrection.

What Are You Waiting For? (1 Corinthians 1:1-9)

Christians are not waiting for a better world, church, or themselves. In Christ, we already have everything we need: forgiveness, the Holy Spirit, Baptism, the Lord’s Supper, and God’s grace. Our hope rests not on our faithfulness but on God’s faithfulness to sustain us to the end. We wait for one thing—the return of Jesus Christ—when we will see Him face to face and our waiting will be over.

Live What You've Been Called (Ephesians 4:1-6)

Christians are called to walk in a manner worthy of the calling they have received in Christ. Having been united to Christ in Baptism, we are called to bear His image through humility, gentleness, patience, and love toward our neighbor. This calling is not something we achieve perfectly, but a lifelong process of repentance, faith, and growth in Christ. Though we continually struggle with sin, we have an unending fountain of forgiveness in Christ’s blood. Therefore, we remember who we are as Christ’s redeemed people and strive to live accordingly, trusting that God will bring His gracious work in us to its final fulfillment.

Life Wins (Luke 7:11-17)

When Jesus, the Lord of Life, met death at the gate of Nain, death gave way to life. Christ has conquered death not only for the widow’s son but for all who believe in Him. Through His death and resurrection, Christ rescues us from the death we deserve and gives us life through His Word and Sacraments. Though death remains a reality in this fallen world, Christ will come again to swallow up death forever and give His people eternal life.

Gifts Gladly Given (Galatians 5:25—6:10)

The Christian life is marked by generous, cheerful giving—not to earn God’s favor, but because Christ has already given us everything through His death and forgiveness. As the widow’s small gift sustained Elijah and enabled God’s Word to continue being proclaimed, our offerings likewise support the preaching of the Gospel and bring eternal comfort to others. Trusting that God knows and provides what we need, we can give freely rather than anxiously, knowing that nothing done in faith for Christ’s kingdom is ever truly lost.

Family Matters (Galatians 5:16-24)

Christians do not earn eternal life by keeping God’s Law; salvation is a gift, purchased by Christ and received through faith. Yet belonging to God’s family changes how we live. Paul warns Christians against persisting in a life characterized by unrepentant sin, while reminding those who struggle with sin and repent that they have been washed, forgiven, and justified in Christ. Through Baptism, the Word, and the Lord’s Supper, Christians are continually reminded of who they are in Christ. Therefore, they are called to “be who you are” by walking according to the Spirit, confessing sin, guarding against temptation, and continually taking refuge in Jesus.

Why Contest the Will? (Galatians 3:15-22)

The Law does not replace God's promise of salvation through Christ. The Law instead exposes our sin and self-righteousness, showing us our need for a Savior. Christ has fulfilled the Law, borne our sins, and gives us eternal life as a free gift. There are no hidden conditions—we are beneficiaries of God's promise in Christ.

Written on the Heart (2 Corinthians 3:4-11)

Paul contrasts the ministry of the Law, which exposes our sin and brings condemnation, with the ministry of the Spirit, which brings righteousness and life through Christ. Like the deaf and mute man whom Jesus healed, sinners cannot open their own ears or tongues to God’s grace. But Christ still says, “Ephphatha—be opened,” opening our ears through His Word, Baptism, Absolution, and the Lord’s Supper. In Christ, we no longer stand before God on the strength of our own righteousness, but as living letters of Christ, bearing the righteousness He has given us.

Double Up, not Down (Genesis 4:1-15)

Cain’s story warns of the danger of “doubling down” on sin. Pride led to jealousy, anger, murder, lies, and despair because Cain refused to repent and trust in God’s mercy. Sin can work the same way in our lives, leading one sin into another when we justify ourselves rather than confessing our need for forgiveness. The answer is not found in our own efforts, but in faith. We are justified not by our works, but by trusting in God’s mercy through Christ, the true Lamb of God, whose perfect sacrifice covers our sin. Rather than doubling down on sin, we are called to “double up” on God’s mercy, trusting Christ, receiving His forgiveness, and living in joyful gratitude.
