The Future of Nuclear Medicine: From Diagnosis to Disease Interception

In this first episode of Uptake: the EANM Podcast, we explore the central role of nuclear medicine in the emerging concept of disease interception — the shift from diagnosing diseases earlier to identifying them before they fully manifest, in order to alter their clinical trajectory at the earliest possible stage. We're joined by two prominent guests: Prof. Paola Erba and Prof. Arturo Chiti. Together, they unpack what disease interception really means, why nuclear medicine is uniquely positioned to drive it, and where the field already puts the concept into practice. The conversation ranges from the promise and risks associated with detecting biological signals before their clinical relevance is clear, to the role of theranostics in enabling interception, and where the research landscape points. About our guests Paola Erba is a nuclear medicine physician and a professor at the University of Milano-Bicocca and currently serves as President of the European Association of Nuclear Medicine (EANM). Arturo Chiti is also a nuclear medicine physician and a professor at the Vita-Salute San Raffaele University in Milan. He is a former EANM President and currently Editor-in-Chief of The EANM Journal.  Papers & studies mentioned Cypess AM, et al., Identification and Importance of Brown Adipose Tissue in Adult Humans -- New England Journal of Medicine 2009;360(15):1509–1517. The study is mentioned in the context of the conversation, and the above information is provided for further reading. About our host Dr. Mariana Andrade, a nuclear medicine physician at the Grand Hôpital de Charleroi, in Belgium, and former board member of the Belgian Society of Nuclear Medicine, is the voice of Uptake: the EANM Podcast.
