Missionary Van Coker | 1 John :1-2:26 | Full Joy & Genuine Fellowship

The sermon explores the purpose of the First Epistle of John, emphasizing that the apostle wrote to ensure believers possess full joy through genuine fellowship with God and one another. It highlights the necessity of walking in the light as Christ is in the light, contrasting this with the deception of concealing sin or denying one's need for an advocate. The message underscores that while Christ's atonement is complete, believers are called to confess sins and maintain a living relationship with God to experience spiritual assurance. The preacher connects these theological truths to practical discipleship, urging the audience to love their brethren and rely on Christ's intercession rather than their own works. Ultimately, the epistle serves as a guide for knowing one's salvation and maintaining a vibrant, joyful connection with the Father.

1 John 5:13-15 | The Certified Warranty of the Saint

The central message of this sermon is the profound assurance of salvation and confident access to God that every believer possesses through faith in Jesus Christ, grounded not in emotions or religious rituals but in the unchanging, written Word of God. Drawing from 1 John 5:13–21, the preacher emphasizes that eternal life is a present reality for those who believe in the name of the Son of God, and this confidence is secured by the Holy Spirit's indwelling, the Father's attentive ear, and the certainty of answered prayer when aligned with God's will. The sermon confronts modern anxiety and spiritual uncertainty by rejecting emotionalism, religious legalism, and fatalistic doctrines, instead calling believers to anchor their faith in Scripture and to live with bold, unwavering trust in God's promises. It underscores that true Christian confidence is not a feeling but a settled conviction rooted in divine revelation, enabling believers to pray with assurance, live with stability, and resist the enemy's attacks through faith in God's faithfulness. Ultimately, the sermon calls for a life of joyful, confident obedience, where knowing God's Word leads to fullness of joy, peace, and spiritual power.

1 John 5:16–21 | Sin Unto Death, Life Through Prayer

The closing verses of 1 John culminate in a powerful call to confident faith, rooted in the certainty of eternal life through belief in Jesus Christ, the true God and eternal life. The passage emphasizes the believer's assurance in prayer, the responsibility to intercede for a fellow believer caught in sin not unto death, and the sober reality of a sin unto death—unspecified but marked by divine judgment, underscoring God's holy authority and the danger of spiritual complacency. It affirms the believer's new identity: born of God, kept by Him, and distinct from a world enslaved to wickedness, with the command to remain vigilant against all idols, whether false gods, worldly attachments, or distorted views of Christ. Ultimately, the epistle's themes of knowing, loving, and obeying God converge in a final exhortation to exclusive devotion to Jesus Christ, the only true God, whose eternal life is not a mere duration but a living, transformative relationship.

1 John 5:6-12 | The Assurance of Salvation through the Witness of God

As we approach the end of this profound epistle, the Apostle John shifts his focus. Throughout the previous chapters, we have been given the requirements for fellowship. We have looked at our walk, do we walk in the light? We have looked at our hearts, do we love the brethren? We have looked at our obedience, do we keep His commandments? But as we arrive at chapter 5, John moves from the proofs of our faith to the foundation of our faith. He has just told us in verse 4 that "this is the victory that overcometh the world, even our faith." But faith is only as good as the object in which it is placed. You cannot simply have "faith in the idea of faith." So, the question arises: On what does our faith rest? How do we know, with absolute certainty, that Jesus is who He said He was? How do we know we possess eternal life?

1 John 5:4-5 | The Victory That Overcomes the World

The central message of the sermon is that genuine faith in Jesus Christ as the Son of God produces a life of victorious obedience, not out of legalism, but from a heart transformed by love for God and His Word. Rooted in 1 John 5, the sermon emphasizes that true believers, born of God, overcome the world—not through their own strength, but through the power of the Holy Spirit and the sustaining reality of faith, which is the very instrument of victory. The world, defined as the system of sin, pride, and worldly values opposed to God, seeks to distract and enslave through lusts of the flesh, eyes, and pride, but those who engage with Scripture, prayer, and community are empowered to resist and use the world as a means to draw nearer to God. The sermon calls for authentic, ongoing faith—marked by consistent obedience, personal discipline, and reliance on Christ—warning that complacency, distraction, and neglect of God's Word lead to spiritual defeat, while faithfulness results in peace, joy, and ultimate triumph, culminating in eternal fellowship with Christ.

1 John 5:1-3 | The Marks of the New Birth

The central message of 1 John 5 is that genuine faith in Jesus Christ produces enduring assurance of salvation, marked by three inseparable evidences: doctrinal faith in Jesus as the Christ, heartfelt love for fellow believers, and a growing obedience to God's commandments. The passage emphasizes that true belief is not a one-time profession but a continuous trust in Christ's identity as the promised Messiah, which results in a new birth that cannot be reversed. This new birth naturally manifests in love for God's children, not as mere sentiment but as sacrificial action, and in obedience to God's commands, which are not burdensome because they flow from a transformed heart empowered by the Holy Spirit. The sermon calls believers to examine themselves honestly, affirming that the presence of all three marks—faith, love, and obedience—provides confidence in one's salvation, while their absence calls for repentance and reevaluation, affirming that salvation is available to all who believe, and assurance is found in the finished work of Christ.

    1 John | Chapter 5 | Introduction Part 2

The central message of 1 John 5 is the assurance of eternal life for every believer, grounded not in feelings or performance but in the simple, confident trust in Jesus Christ's finished work. The epistle, written to believers for the purpose of confirming their salvation, emphasizes that eternal life is a present possession, not a future hope, and is secured by faith in Christ's name, not by human effort. This certainty fosters bold confidence in prayer and spiritual growth, as believers are assured that God hears them when they ask according to His will, while also being called to intercede for fellow believers who stumble in sin—though not for those who persist in willful, unrepentant rebellion that reveals a severed relationship with Christ. The passage concludes with a call to remain vigilant against idolatry, warning that anything that displaces Christ as the true God and source of eternal life—whether false teachings, materialism, or self-reliance—undermines the very foundation of the Christian life.

    1 John | Chapter 5 | Introduction Part 1

First John Chapter 5 brings the epistle to its powerful conclusion by answering the question that lies at the heart of every believer's experience: How can I know with absolute certainty that I possess eternal life? This chapter does not leave the believer in doubt or speculation. Rather, John writes "that ye may know that ye have eternal life" (1 John 5:13). The entire chapter builds toward this assurance by establishing three foundational pillars: the reality of spiritual victory, the reliability of God's testimony, and the certainty of present possession.
