The Music Gate: Why “I’m Not Musical” Is Missing the Point

What happens when someone hears the word music and immediately decides, “That’s not for me”? In this episode, Becky explores the Music Gate—the invisible barrier that can make us think music belongs only to musicians. But underneath music are timing, prediction, pattern, movement, attention, regulation, and connection: processes our brains use every day. Maybe we don’t need to convince everyone to become “music people.” Maybe we need to look at what music can teach us about being human. We often hear, “They’re really smart—they’re just socially immature.” But what does social maturity actually mean? In this episode, Becky looks at social development through the lens of temporal organization and explores how waiting, turn-taking, reading social cues, and knowing when to act may all depend on a child’s developing sense of timing. 🎧 Also available wherever you get your podcasts. What Brain Research Says About Learning Styles

Are you a visual learner? An auditory learner? A kinesthetic learner? For years, we’ve been told that people learn best when information is matched to their individual “learning style.” But what does brain research actually tell us?      In this episode, we look at the learning-styles idea through the lens of neuroscience, including György Buzsáki’s inside-out view of the brain. We’ll explore why learning preferences are real—but why they may not mean what we’ve been taught to think they mean. We’ll also look at what matters more: prior knowledge, practice, attention, movement, working memory, and choosing teaching strategies that actually fit what is being learned. The Brain isn’t a Bunch of Little Boxes!

What if the colorful brain images we see aren’t telling us quite what we think they are? In this podcast, we look at neuroscientist György Buzsáki’s provocative comparison of the brain-as-little-boxes approach to modern-day phrenology—and explore why the brain may be better understood as a dynamic, interconnected system organized through time.
