Dr. Kimmy Unplugged | *Brilliant Doctors Building with Messy Brains*

Dr. Kimmy

I'm Dr. Kimmy. Board-certified pediatrician. ICF-certified coach. Founder of The Doctor Coach School. ADHD brain running on Vyvanse and audacity. This podcast is where I talk about all of it. Out loud. Unfiltered. I left a full-time clinical career to build a coaching business from scratch. I've helped doctors become certified coaches, build real businesses, and sign paying clients. My clients have generated over a million dollars in coaching revenue. I almost shut it all down and called it alignment. Then I didn't. Dr. Kimmy Unplugged is for the woman physician who knows she was built for more than medicine. The doctor who wants to start a coaching business but doesn't know where to begin. The ADHD entrepreneur who is tired of buying courses and never finishing them. The woman who is doctoring and coaching and mothering and building and barely holding it together and somehow still showing up. I talk about how to build a profitable coaching business as a doctor. I talk about ADHD and executive function and what it actually looks like to run a business with a brain that won't cooperate. I talk about faith and marriage and raising kids and the stuff nobody else says out loud. No scripts. No guests (usually). No filter. New episodes weekly. Find me on Instagram @thedrkimmy and on Tiktok @drkimmy_. Learn more about The Doctor Coach School at www.thedoctorcoachschool.com.

Stuck Between Two Worlds: When you want a big life with a messy brain

You’re a doctor. You’re neurodivergent (or think you might be). And you want more. You want the big life. The audacious goal. The business, the leadership, the creative work, the next thing you keep thinking about even when part of you is trying to convince yourself that maybe you should just be satisfied with what you already have. But your brain is…messy. And sometimes it feels like there are only two rooms available to you. There’s the room full of high-achieving doctors and entrepreneurs doing big things—setting huge goals, executing, building, creating—and you leave inspired as hell…until you get dropped back into your actual life. The unread emails. The unfinished projects. The notes you’re behind on. The fact that you forgot to eat. Again. And suddenly you’re wondering if maybe you just don’t have the capacity they have. Then there’s the other room. The room where neurodivergent people actually understand your brain. Where your limitations are acknowledged. Where we talk about accommodations, executive dysfunction, fluctuating capacity, and how exhausting it can be to function in systems that weren’t built for us. And that room can feel like a relief. Until you realize you’re still sitting there wanting more. So now what? Because I don’t want to pretend my limitations aren’t real in order to chase my desires. But I also refuse to sacrifice my desires because my limitations are real. In this episode, I’m talking about what it feels like to be a neurodivergent doctor stuck between those two worlds—and the third option I’ve had to create for myself. My capacity can be dynamic. My desire can stay static. I can honor what my brain and body are actually available for today without putting the life I want back up for negotiation every time my capacity changes. I can keep the desire and negotiate the method. If you’re a neurodivergent doctor with a messy brain who still wants a big, expansive life, this episode is for you.

"I Have a Question for You": Credentialing, Shame, and Going Back to Clinical Medicine

I recorded this one in the car, driving home from my first day back in a hospital in five years. Today was new employee orientation. Badge photo, trainings, paperwork — and a lecture from a woman in an office about how far behind I am. I'm credentialing at three healthcare systems right now, and paperwork is my kryptonite. It always has been. The difference is that this time I know why. So this episode is me going back over the last time I went through credentialing — at my first attending job, undiagnosed — and the phone call from the chair of my department that started my career off feeling like a failure on day one. "I have a question for you." Six words. Then: "Don't you want to make money for your family?" I'm talking about what it does to a high achiever to be treated that way while you're already beating yourself up harder than anyone else could. And I'm talking about what was different today: I felt the embarrassment in my body, and I still kept my dignity. In this episode: Why easy things — paperwork, email, forms — darn near take us outThe difference between executive dysfunction and being lazyThe chair's phone call, and what it costs to lash in instead of lash outBeing clinically excellent and still behind on documentationWhat I have now that I didn't have then: a diagnosis, a therapist, medication, a husband who gets itBeing her and becoming her at the same time — and why you have to do bothI'm in the thick of the return. Building with a Messy Brain, Part 3: They Rejected Me...Then I Rejected Myself.

I almost did not record this episode. I tried three times. The first time, I recorded for an entire hour before realizing there was no audio. The next attempt disappeared too. Then, while trying to prepare myself to record AGAIN, I asked an AI app to summarize my last episode. It gave me the summary. And then it gave me an unsolicited critique. Y'all. 😑 Within minutes, I went from being ready to record to crying, arguing with an AI app, and wanting to shut my computer and go to bed. And then I realized something. This is the episode. Because what happened to me that night was a tiny version of what happened to my business over the course of two and a half years. In 2023, I found out that a group of Black women physicians were saying negative things about me online. It hurt. BAD. But I had a business to run. A launch coming. Money to make. So I got coached, cried, talked about it publicly, and kept moving. I thought I had moved through it. I had not. My brain had quietly made a calculation: Visibility + vulnerability = rejection. Rejection = pain. So the obvious solution was to reduce my visibility. Except my brain was smart enough not to say, "Kimmy, we're scared, so let's hide." I would have caught that. Instead, my fear put on a blazer and created a strategic plan. 😂 Let's adjust the messaging. Let's make the brand more professional. Let's talk more about the frameworks and less about me. Let's let the company speak for itself. It all sounded reasonable. Meanwhile, I was slowly disappearing inside the company I built. And the wildest part? The business kept growing. The next year was our biggest revenue year ever. So I had no idea that the very strategy protecting me from rejection was also slowly choking my business. By 2025, I was ready to close the company. It took me two and a half years to finally see what happened. They rejected me. Then I rejected me. That is what this episode is about. I am taking you inside what rejection looked like in my brain and body, how fear disguised itself as perfectly reasonable business strategy, and how I slowly took a dream I still wanted away from myself because pursuing it had become too painful. And I want you to look at your own life while you listen. That leadership position you stopped pursuing. That paper you never submitted again. That business you keep saying you will start "when the timing is better." That idea you quietly stopped talking about. That dream you swear you do not want anymore. When did you stop wanting it? What happened right before that? Did your desire actually change? Or did your brain decide that pursuing it had become too expensive? I am rebuilding differently now. Not because rejection does not hurt me anymore. It does. The difference is that rejection can hurt me without getting decision-making authority in my life. Other people are allowed to reject me. I am no longer willing to join them.

Building with a Messy Brain, Part 2: The Gap and the Collapse

You know you're brilliant. That was never the question. The question is why your life doesn't look like it yet. In this episode, I'm talking about the gap. The one between the vision you have for yourself, the leader you know you're meant to be, the things you know you're capable of creating, and the way you're actually showing up right now. The unfinished projects. The broken promises to yourself. The snooze button you hit six times before your feet touch the floor. The track record that says one thing while your mind says another. I'm sharing how I lived in that gap for years, how I tried to fix it by doing more, organizing more, planning more, and how none of that worked. What actually changed everything was learning how to believe differently. Not affirmations on sticky notes. Real beliefs, built through small actions, until my brain couldn't argue with the evidence anymore. I'm also getting honest about what happened when rejection hit me at a level I didn't even know I was carrying, how I slowly started hiding in my own company, and how I almost shut the whole thing down three weeks before everything turned around. If you're a physician who knows exactly who she wants to be but can't figure out why she's not being her yet, this one is for you. In this episode: Why the gap between your vision and your reality isn't a discipline problem The difference between self-esteem and self-trust (and why you have one but not the other) Why affirmations fail when your actions don't match How I went from "the chick who can't do her billing" to keynotes, publications, and a promotion What rejection-sensitive dysphoria actually looks like when you don't know you have ADHD The moment I almost closed my company and called it "purpose" Why sitting in the gap is the first step every single time

Building with a Messy Brain, Part 1: The Origin Story

Before there was a business, there was a woman who felt like a hot mess every single day. In this episode I go all the way back to the beginning: pediatric hospital medicine, award-winning teaching evaluations, and an inbox, a billing queue, and a life I could not stay on top of. I didn't know I had ADHD. I just thought I was lazy. I used to say I was triple board certified — pediatrics, pediatric hospital medicine, and being a hot mess. Then things went from bad to worse. I got pregnant, my mother got sick, and a year and a half later she was gone. Cleaning out her house after the funeral, I found a manila envelope with her handwriting inside — an entire book she had written by hand more than twenty years earlier and never told a single soul about. Sitting on her floor with that book in my hands, I said out loud, "I want to live a life of purpose." I share what happened next, which was not the manifestation story you're expecting: I got fired from a leadership position, I papered my office in affirmations that did absolutely nothing, and in December 2017 I hit my actual rock bottom. This is also the episode where things turn. Therapy. A Mel Robbins video on my thirty-sixth birthday. The morning I stopped saying "5, 4, 3, 2, 1" and started saying "I can do hard things" — and the realization that changed everything: my brain is not broken, it's different, and it needs different support. I'll take you through what that belief shift unlocked (the textbook chapter, the keynote, the leadership roles) and end with the day I got called into the chair's office and, voice shaking, named racism out loud to the most powerful person in my department — and got an apology. This is part one. Next episode: building the company, scaling it, and how I almost burned the whole thing down. Chapters 01:10 — Triple board certified in being a hot mess 06:51 — The book my mother wrote by hand and never told anyone about 08:37 — "I want to live a life of purpose" 10:04 — Fired from a leadership position a month in 12:18 — Why affirmations did nothing for me 16:17 — Rock bottom, and finding a therapist 19:04 — The five-second rule and my thirty-sixth birthday 22:20 — "I can do hard things": belief built through action 24:40 — My brain is different, so I gave it what it needs 28:55 — Called into the chair's office 32:32 — Speaking truth to power, and the apology 36:04 — Why this is part one If this one landed, share it with someone who's brilliant at their job and quietly drowning everywhere else. And tell me what you want me to unpack next — I'm listening.

Success with a Messy Brain: Welcome to Dr. Kimmy Unplugged

You can be brilliant, accomplished, and still feel like your brain refuses to cooperate. That’s the starting line for Dr. Kimmy Unplugged, a new show where I tell the truth about building a life and business you love with a messy brain, not the curated version that looks good on paper. I’m Dr. Kimmy, a 44-year-old Black woman physician, entrepreneur, and homeschooling mom, and I’m done pretending that executive dysfunction, procrastination, anxiety, and identity pressure are side notes.  I share why this is my third podcast, why the “buttoned up” format no longer fits, and how a late ADHD diagnosis in December 2025 made my life feel like it fell apart and came back together at the same time. We talk about what it means to rebuild after self-sabotage, how I unknowingly burned my business down until I was standing in the ashes, and why “messy” can be a strategy instead of a shame label. You’ll also hear the lens I bring as a Black woman in America with Caribbean roots, plus the faith that overflows into how I think about courage, work, and growth.  I also lay out what’s coming next: practical frameworks, tools, and real-time stories as I rescale the Doctor Coach School™, explore building Attentii™ (an AI-powered coaching tool for high-achieving women with ADHD), and transition back into the medical workforce. This space is for high-achievers who want more and are ready to stop fighting their brains in silence. Subscribe, share this with a friend who needs it, and leave a review or comment telling me what you want me to unpack next.
