India vs. Pakistan: Nuclear Rivals, Shared Air and Climate Crisis | Shyam Saran

Hey! I'd love to hear your thoughts, send me a voice note. Beyond Climate Threat: Can nuclear rivals India and Pakistan work together to address their common air pollution? In this episode of Earth Chakra, former Foreign Secretary Shyam Saran joins the host, Chetan Bhattacharji, to explain why the climate crisis has transformed from an environmental concern into a matter of national security that no border can contain. Ambassador Saran was also Chairman of India’s National Security Advisory Board, the Prime Minister’s Special Envoy for Indo-US Civil Nuclear Issues and Special Envoy and Chief Negotiator on Climate Change. Key Discussion Points: The Subcontinent as One: Why South Asia - including Nepal, Bhutan, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka - is a single ecological unit, regardless of political boundaries. Climate vs. Diplomacy: Why "Net Zero" targets might be a global "sleight of hand" and what it means for India’s development. The Coal Paradox: Navigating the urgent need for a green transition while meeting India's growing energy demands. Strategic Autonomy: How ecological degradation challenges India’s capacity for independent decision-making on the world stage. Why This Matters: This conversation dives deep into the "collective blindness" of regional leadership and why traditional diplomacy is failing to address the shared environmental threats facing future generations. While defence budgets prioritise military hardware and territorial borders, ecological crises like cross-border air pollution, melting Himalayan glaciers, and severe water scarcity are rapidly emerging as hard security threats across South Asia. The conversation explores why national security and ecological protection are deeply interconnected, and why regional powers must re-evaluate their strategic frameworks. Amb. Saran provides a candid, evidence-based critique of global climate policy, explaining why baseline concepts like Net Zero targets and Carbon Capture technologies function as an institutional "sleight of hand" rather than genuine emissions reduction mechanisms. Drawing on his decades inside high-stakes international negotiations, from the Copenhagen Climate Summit to the Indo-US Civil Nuclear Deal, he details the systemic default of developed nations on climate finance, why India must practice "Nehru's enlightened self-interest," and how climate volatility directly threatens state autonomy.

The Simple Battery That Could Solve India’s Heatwave Power Crisis

Hey! I'd love to hear your thoughts, send me a voice note. Beyond Fossil Fuels: India is producing record amounts of solar energy, but a fair bit of it is being wasted, as Ember, a research group, points out. This waste or curtailment even happened during peak heatwaves in mid-May, 2026. It is happening because of a massive grid storage bottleneck. While the government targets 208 gigawatt-hours of Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) by 2030, a massive gap remains. Most deployed BESS today rely on lithium-ion chemistry, which is expensive, has safety concerns, and is dependent on foreign supply chains. "We are dependent on oil imports; why should we depend on battery imports?" - Stuti Kakkar, co-founder, Meine Electric In this episode, I sit down with Stuti Kakkar and Priyansh Mohan, co-founders of Meine Electric, an Indian deep-tech startup building a groundbreaking alternative for long-duration BESS: Iron-Air batteries. They are aiming for production soon. Operating on the principle of reversible rusting, their indigenous technology offers an asymmetric 6-hour charge and 18-hour discharge cycle perfectly optimised for the solar day—at a Capex that is up to 4 times cheaper than traditional lithium-ion BESS at scale. We dive into the science of fast-charging iron air batteries, the challenges of navigating India's "pilot phase capital gap," and how local innovation can secure energy sovereignty for the Global South without relying on carbon credits or subsidies. 📌Key Highlights in this Episode: The grid bottleneck: Why India's BESS targets require long-duration storage. The Tech: Breaking the historic 10% round-trip efficiency limit of iron-air chemistry. The Economics: Replacing diesel generators with a ₹4-5/kWh solar+BESS asset. Policy & Funding: Why tenders and deep-tech capital must evolve to support hardware startups.
