3: The Theater Episode with Sharen Sonntag

Josh sits down with his friend Sharen Sonntag to trace her journey from the theater stage and an Amazon warehouse to gender transition and a new calling as a counselor. Together, they explore performance as both sanctuary and survival skill, the grief of leaving behind lives we once worked hard to build, and the winding path toward becoming who we were all along.

  2. Sep 21

2: The Jesus Music Episode with Brandon Boykin

Josh sits down with Austin librarian and grad student Brandon Boykin to revisit the contemporary Christian music, youth groups, Winter Jam concerts, and evangelical culture that shaped their adolescence in South Alabama. Together, they explore how the church offered two queer teenagers genuine community while teaching them they did not belong, and what it means to reclaim the songs that once held both their faith and their shame—this time, on their own terms.

  3. Sep 7

1: The Legacy Episode with Caitlin Dowell

In the inaugural episode of Out Back with Josh, Josh sits down with longtime friend Caitlin Dowell to ask what queer people leave behind and who will preserve our stories if we don’t. Through conversations about marriage, chosen family, queer elders, lost histories, visibility, and the wonderfully strange fate Josh has planned for his skeleton, they explore legacy not as something reserved for after death, but as something we build through the lives we touch, the stories we tell, and the courage to live openly.
