    Episode 12: Naval Submarines to Robotic Shoulders (Dr. Mighell and Dr. Badman)

    It's Navy Week! Notre Dame plays Navy, and Golden Helmets & Green Jackets is marking it with two shoulder surgeons whose careers run through service, South Bend and the reverse shoulder revolution. Dr. Mark Mighell grew up in the DC area, went to UVA on a Navy scholarship and trained in undersea medicine. He talks about life on a submarine ("like sleeping in a coffin"), serving in Bahrain during Operation Desert Storm, Navy surgical training and leadership, and retiring as a Commander.  Dr. Brian Badman grew up on the south side of South Bend, went to the IU School of Medicine (where he roomed with Jeff Yergler), did his residency at Florida and then a fellowship with Dr. Mighell. He shares how his grandparents and mentors shaped him, and how his son Alex found the Notre Dame connection. Then we talk about the reverse shoulder revolution, faith and the hardest cases, robotics vs. patient-specific guides, augmented reality, cost and the future of shoulder replacement. We finish with golf after a shoulder replacement, fishing, and Jeff Yergler's famous tailgate.
