"You're Next": Jameson Lopp on Why Bitcoin Got Hacked First

Jameson Lopp has been doing Bitcoin security for over a decade. He's been pulling his beard out for the last six weeks — and his message isn't "Bitcoin is broken." It's "you're next."Bitcoin got hit first because Bitcoin keys are a bearer asset: get the keys, the coins are yours, and there's no chargeback. Highest payoff, lowest friction, so that's where AI-assisted attackers pointed the tools first. Once the easy money here is picked over, they move on — to banks, to anything holding your ID, to infrastructure. The number that made me record this: the industry standard used to be ONE external security audit a year, $50-100k, 10-20 findings. Casa's AI pentest harness filed about 120 issues last month — and several hundred more after a model upgrade. Lopp wrote 300 lines of code all year before August. In August he wrote 50,000.In this episode: what actually changed (velocity, not the nature of security), why "just write secure code" isn't a real option once you count your dependencies, why multisig users appear to have lost nothing in the Cold Card incident, and the practical tiers for protecting your stack at $1,000 and at life-changing money.Disclosure: Lopp is CSO of Casa, a custody company, and some of this advice lands where his business does. The source episode also carries paid sponsor reads. Nothing here is financial advice.SOURCE — watch the full interview, this is my read, not a replacement🎙️ Jameson Lopp on What Bitcoin Did: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EDnw-Y8LS8ALOPP'S OWN WRITING ON THIS — all three are worth your time📝 "Don't Trust Clankers: AI Agents Are Dangerously Helpful": https://blog.casa.io/dont-trust-clankers-ai-agents-are-dangerously-helpful/📝 "How We Built a Reliable AI Pentester": https://blog.casa.io/how-built-reliable-ai-pentest/📝 "The Rise of the Machines": https://blog.casa.io/the-rise-of-the-machines/#Bitcoin #BitcoinSecurity #SelfCustody

Bitcoin at $79,000 Going Into A Fed Decision

A 22-year-old just pleaded guilty to stealing more than $245 million in crypto — and the 4,100 bitcoin inside that total are worth more today than they were the day they were taken.Today's episode is about the gap between a big number and an important number, and it opens in that federal courtroom in Washington: what the Malone Lam case actually establishes, what the figure discrepancy across outlets really means, and why 4,100 coins is an enormous theft in dollars and about 0.02% of circulating supply. Then to Blockstream's flat refusal to pay the Liquid hackers, the roughly 600 coins still held, and the distinction between a federated sidechain incident and a base-layer failure. From there into the week itself — bitcoin near $78,000 into a Fed decision, Gareth Soloway's support band at $75,500 to $76,000, Benjamin Cowen's call for a higher dollar, and an honest grading of 2 calls this channel made on September 10, including the one that has not worked. Jeff Ross argues AI is too big to fail and the episode takes that seriously enough to point out it carries no falsifier. Then Metaplanet's 41% option-pool cancellation, tomorrow's Clarity Act vote, the House of Lords going against the UK government 194 to 138, Nasdaq's $100 million into Kraken's parent, and $449 million of ETF outflows put over a real denominator. The episode closes with Today in Bitcoin History: September 14, 2017, the day BTCChina announced it was shutting down and bitcoin fell roughly 25% in 48 hours.Subscribe for 15 minutes of bitcoin every weekday, with the numbers put over denominators and the show's own past calls graded out loud.Sources and creators drawn on today:Wolf of All Streets (Scott Melker), with Jim Bianco, Jordi Visser, Dave Weisberger and Mike McGlone — https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-e_b5T3-g4IWhat Bitcoin Did, with Jeff Ross — https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aex2ptObKtUNatalie Brunell, The News Block — https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dLf8sBzahC8Benjamin Cowen, Into The Cryptoverse — https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sQHlGfz7A24Gareth Soloway, Verified Investing — https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=leWFKuETS7sReporting from Bitcoin Magazine, CoinDesk, Cointelegraph and Quartz. Macro: Lyn Alden vs James Lavish - $80 Billion Japan Lever in One Month

Japan spent about $80 billion of its foreign exchange reserves in a single month defending the yen — the biggest monthly drop in their reserves in modern history — and the dollar fell from 164 yen to about 153.7 days before that data landed, James Lavish had a yen in freefall on his list of pressures that could drag bitcoin down regardless of any cycle model, with a quiet qualifier about intervention doing a lot of work in the sentence. Lyn Alden's report this morning is, in effect, an answer to that qualifier: an accounting of roughly $2.2 trillion in deployable foreign assets, plus another $500 billion available from a pension reallocation, and her conclusion that she'll keep fading the disorderly-Japan outcome. This episode takes that disagreement apart and names the specific evidence that would settle it.Along the way: why Alden argues the level of bond yields isn't the story but their persistence is, with the 10-year moving from about 4% to just under 5% and mortgages pushing toward 7%. August CPI at 3.35% and her case that it barely matters what the Fed does when the inflation is fiscal and energy driven rather than credit driven. Both writers landing on the $5,000 Trump dividend on the same Sunday and asking completely different questions about it — Lavish on whether the machinery permits it, Alden pricing it at under 15% odds and weighing the $1.3 trillion it would add to the deficit. And the quieter story in her final section: the 5 big hyperscalers going from about $35 billion of debt a year to $200 billion or more, bidding against the Treasury for the same pool of savings and raising the cost of capital for everyone outside the AI trade. Then the call this show is committing to grade. Lavish thinks the July 1st low at $57,748 is this cycle's bottom, and he attached dates: October 5th and November 16th. We come back to both.SOURCES — both are paid subscriptions, and this episode is commentary on their reasoning, not a replacement for reading them. 3 Forecasters, 3 Methods, 1 Bitcoin Number: $253K

Bitcoin ETFs just lost $449 million over 3 trading sessions — and the level everyone expected to crack under that kind of pressure barely moved.On-chain data around Bitcoin's sub-$58,000 dip from July is showing what analysts are calling an anomaly: holders near that level have barely reacted, which either means the floor is real or means nobody's tested it yet. Today's episode rescales that outflow number against $55 billion in cumulative ETF inflows, walks through a guilty plea in one of the largest Bitcoin thefts on record, covers Nasdaq's $100 million bet on Kraken's parent company, and puts 3 independent forecasts — from a livestream bull, a chartist who just covered his short, and a spreadsheet-first retirement planner — next to each other to see where they actually agree. Also: the CLARITY Act's updated text ahead of next week's Senate vote, Tom Lee's bullish case for crypto on Wealthion, a builder's pitch for payments as easy as sending a text, and today's Bitcoin History segment on the 2017 China exchange-shutdown scare that Bitcoin shook off in 3 months. This channel runs on arithmetic, not adjectives — every number gets a denominator, and every call gets a falsifier we hold ourselves to on camera.Sources drawn on today: The Wolf Of All Streets (Dan Tapiero) — https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ypv8Li7gGuI · Gareth Soloway — https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4Ti6cXCWn1g · Betirement — https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jU6fQ9jW2AI · Wealthion (Tom Lee) — https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZpdPhN7aZYA · Natalie Brunell (Vik Sharma) — https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dDNUME0TNOw · Reporting from Bitcoin Magazine, Cointelegraph and CoinDesk. ETF Buyers Are 229 Days Underwater. Almost None Are Selling.

Everybody who owns Bitcoin through a spot ETF is, on average, losing money — and almost none of them are selling. The aggregate cost basis across the US spot Bitcoin ETFs sits near $86,000. Bitcoin is at $77,954. That group has now spent 229 consecutive sessions below water, carrying roughly $3.9 billion in paper losses. Meanwhile Glassnode's sell-side risk ratio has reset to 7, and long-term holders' share of realised profit has collapsed to 47% from 88% at the August peak.Today's episode: the CLARITY Act vote that lands next week and what it actually decides; this week's $166.8 million of ETF outflows put against the $3.8 billion the same funds took in over the prior 3 weeks; Benjamin Cowen's 78-minute bull-versus-bear scorecard, including the QQQ analogy that he says keeps him up at night; Strive CEO Matt Cole on how a company went from just over 5,000 Bitcoin to more than 24,000 during a bear market, and what went wrong with Metaplanet's executive share pool; and a caller's question to Jack Mallers about whether Bitcoin is quietly being rebuilt into the system it was meant to replace.Plus: why September 10 is a blank space on the Bitcoin history calendar, and the honest version of what happened on that date instead.I also grade my own call from yesterday's episode, which hasn't played out.Subscribe if you'd rather have arithmetic than adjectives. One episode every weekday, 15 minutes, no hype.Sources drawn on today: The Wolf Of All Streets with Matt Cole — https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dwWKnzLrHgU · Benjamin Cowen, "Bitcoin: Bull Case Vs. Jack Dorsey Just Applied to Become a Bitcoin Bank

Jack Dorsey's company just asked the federal government for permission to become a bank that holds Bitcoin and nothing else.Block filed with the OCC today to charter Builders Bank and Trust — custody and fiduciary services for Bitcoin and stablecoins, no deposits, no lending. I explain why that filing and the last 6 weeks of hacks are the same story. Then: Bitwise CIO Matt Hougan breaks the Bitcoin ETF flow number into 3 parts and tells you to cut it in half — and the part he says isn't real buying is people fleeing their own hardware wallets. We go through the full list: Coldcard, the Trezor breach growing toward 80,000 customers, Bits of Gold, the $320 million Liquid Network incident and the 598.5 BTC the white hats kept, Cronos rolling back its own chain, and Harmony shutting down entirely because it can't defend against AI.Plus Benjamin Cowen on Bitcoin's golden cross and why the dump after it is the boring part, the Hunter Biden memecoin that did a full cycle in an hour, and a macro tape — 10-year at 4.8%, Brent above $100 — that should have knocked Bitcoin down and hasn't.And today in Bitcoin history: a date with no legend attached, and why I'm not going to invent one.Nothing here is financial advice. The Warren Buffett of Bitcoin: Inside Lyn Alden's ORANGE JUICE

Lyn Alden raised $40 million to buy boring American small businesses — and her own comparison for it isn't MicroStrategy. It's Berkshire Hathaway.ORANGE JUICE is a permanent capital company: it acquires profitable businesses doing $1-10M a year in cash flow, holds them forever instead of flipping them like private equity, and stacks the cash flow into a Bitcoin treasury at the parent-company level.Today I break down exactly how the model works, why Alden argues pure-play Bitcoin treasury companies are structurally procyclical — "persistently reliant on external capital," in her words — and why she thinks a business that generates cash can keep buying Bitcoin through a bear market when the treasury companies structurally can't.I also give you the 4 real risks, because this is a company she co-owns and this episode is not a commercial.Plus: what she told Danny Knowles this week about the US being "long-term insolvent," and why the macro view is the thing that explains the company.Lyn Alden is a founding partner of ORANGE JUICE and has a direct financial interest in it.
