How Amsterdam Invented the Modern Stock Market

In 1602, Grand Pensionary Johan van Oldenbarnevelt brought together competing Dutch spice-trading companies to form the Vereenigde Oostindische Compagnie (VOC), creating a new corporate model that would profoundly influence modern capitalism. The VOC raised unprecedented amounts of long-term capital to finance Asian trade, military operations, ships, and overseas infrastructure during the Eighty Years’ War against Spain. Its most consequential innovation was permanent capital. Unlike earlier trading ventures, VOC investors could not simply redeem their investment from the company. Instead, ownership interests could be transferred to other buyers, creating a secondary market in tradable shares and making long-term corporate capital more liquid. Amsterdam soon developed the financial institutions needed to support this system. The Amsterdamsche Wisselbank, established in 1609, provided highly reliable book-entry money and standardized payments, reducing currency and settlement risks. The Amsterdam Beurs, established in 1611, became a major center for trading commodities and securities, concentrating market activity and improving liquidity. Together, these institutions helped transform Amsterdam into Europe's leading financial center. The new market environment also encouraged increasingly sophisticated forms of financial speculation, including short selling, associated particularly with Isaac Le Maire's activities, as well as options, futures, and speculative trading known as windhandel. The system broadened access to investment beyond a small circle of merchants and financiers, allowing a much wider segment of Dutch society to participate in corporate ownership. At the same time, the availability of relatively inexpensive capital strengthened the Dutch Republic's ability to finance commerce, government, and its prolonged struggle against Spain. Yet the financial revolution was inseparable from the VOC's political and colonial power. The company possessed extraordinary state-granted privileges, including the ability to wage war, conclude treaties, and administer overseas territories. Its commercial expansion was accompanied by coercion and extreme violence, most notoriously in the VOC's conquest of the Banda Islands in 1621. After the Glorious Revolution of 1688, many elements of the Dutch financial model were adopted and expanded in England. The resulting Anglo-Dutch financial system helped establish institutions and practices that would become fundamental to modern global capital markets. From Yorktown to Amsterdam: John Adams’s Diplomatic Mission (1780 - 1788)

Between 1780 and 1788, John Adams undertook a crucial diplomatic and financial campaign in the Dutch Republic to secure American sovereignty and establish the new nation’s financial credibility. Leaving Paris in an effort to reduce American dependence on French diplomatic influence, Adams pursued direct engagement with Dutch public opinion. He cultivated ties with Patriot leader Joan Derk van der Capellen tot den Pol and used published essays to argue for American independence, resilience, and republican legitimacy. Following the Franco-American victory at Yorktown, Adams’s campaign reached a historic turning point. On April 19, 1782, the States General formally recognized the United States as an independent nation. Adams then established America’s first diplomatic mission in the Dutch Republic, acquiring the country’s first foreign-owned embassy at Fluwelen Burgwal 18 in The Hague. Recognition opened the way to Amsterdam’s powerful financial markets. Working with the banking houses of Wilhem & Jan Willink and Nicolaas & Jacob van Staphorst, Adams secured an initial 5,000,000-guilder loan in June 1782 and negotiated a Treaty of Amity and Commerce later that year. His mission was marked by severe personal and political challenges, including a near-fatal illness and, in the winter of 1788, a hazardous journey across frozen waterways undertaken amid fears of an American default. By the end of his Dutch mission, Adams had helped secure more than 30,000,000 guilders in Dutch loans, providing the United States with vital access to European capital. He regarded his work in the Dutch Republic as the greatest diplomatic achievement of his life. Disclaimer: The Naked Dutch Podcast is for educational and entertainment purposes only. The Dutch Nobility Act of 1994: Titles, Inheritance, and Power

The Dutch Nobility Act of 1994 (Wet op de adeldom) established the modern legal framework governing Dutch nobility following the 1983 constitutional revision. Adopted by the States General, the Act confirmed that nobility is exclusively nominal and honorary, carrying no political, civic, or fiscal privileges. Noble titles and predicates are incorporated into Dutch civil registration and protected against unauthorized use under criminal law. Article 2 effectively abolished the creation of new civilian nobility, limiting future grants of noble status to members of the Royal House. Limited procedures remain for the recognition of indigenous noble lineages dating from before 1795 and for the incorporation of certain foreign nobles into the Dutch nobility. Noble status is generally transmitted through the male line. Women retain their noble status throughout their lives but do not transmit it to their descendants. The Act also modernized the rules concerning parentage, allowing legally recognized children born outside marriage, as well as adopted children of noble fathers, to acquire noble status. The Act further confirmed the statutory role of the High Council of Nobility (Hoge Raad van Adel), which maintains the official register of Dutch nobility and provides advice to the Crown on matters concerning noble status, titles, and pedigrees. Sephardic Amsterdam: Merchants, Rabbis, and Rebels

In the late 16th century, Portuguese conversos, or crypto-Jews, fleeing persecution by the Iberian Inquisition began settling in Amsterdam, attracted by the Dutch Republic’s unprecedented degree of religious tolerance. Many sought to rebuild an openly Jewish identity after generations of forced conversion. This prosperous merchant elite developed a disciplined, transnational commercial network known as a Nação, meaning “The Nation.” The community was governed by the Mahamad, a powerful lay council, and in 1639 three separate congregations united to form Kahal Kodesh Talmud Torah. Amsterdam’s Sephardic Jews became deeply involved in international maritime commerce, invested in the Dutch West India Company, and helped establish some of the earliest Jewish communities and synagogues in the Americas, including in Recife and New Amsterdam. The city also emerged as one of the great centers of Jewish intellectual life and publishing. Menasseh ben Israel established an influential Hebrew printing press, while the Ets Haim library became an important repository of Jewish scholarship. In 1675, the community inaugurated the magnificent Portuguese Synagogue, or Esnoga, a monumental expression of its wealth, confidence, and permanence. Yet prosperity was accompanied by profound religious and intellectual tensions. Amsterdam’s Sephardic community witnessed the controversial excommunications of Uriel da Costa and Baruch Spinoza, while messianic enthusiasm surrounding Sabbatai Zevi swept through the community in 1666. Over subsequent centuries, Sephardic Jews became demographically overshadowed by the much larger Ashkenazi population, and the community suffered catastrophic losses during the Holocaust. Nevertheless, Amsterdam’s Sephardim played a formative role in the development of modern Jewish identity, global Jewish commerce, Hebrew publishing, religious thought, and the history of Jewish life in the Western world. Menasseh ben Israel: The Amsterdam Rabbi Who Reopened England to the Jews

Menasseh ben Israel (1604–1657), born Manoel Dias Suero, was a Portuguese-born Sephardic rabbi, scholar, publisher, and diplomat who became one of Amsterdam’s most influential Jewish intellectuals. In 1626, he established Northern Europe’s first Hebrew printing press, producing finely crafted Hebrew books with distinctive typefaces that influenced Jewish publishing for generations. A remarkable intermediary between rabbinic Judaism and Christian Hebraism, he corresponded with leading European intellectuals such as Hugo Grotius, advised Queen Christina of Sweden, and maintained a close artistic association with Rembrandt. Menasseh’s intellectual life was deeply shaped by messianic expectation. In his 1650 treatise, The Hope of Israel, he argued that the worldwide dispersion of the Jewish people was connected to the fulfillment of biblical prophecy and the approach of the Messianic Age. He paid particular attention to reports of Jews living among distant peoples and argued that the dispersion had to reach the “ends of the earth” before redemption could occur. England therefore acquired a special significance in his thinking, both as a distant land and as a potential final destination of Jewish dispersion. In 1655, Menasseh traveled to England and petitioned Oliver Cromwell to permit Jews to return after centuries of exclusion. Although Parliament never enacted a formal law of readmission, the ensuing legal debate established that no statute explicitly prohibited Jews from settling in England. Cromwell subsequently permitted a practical, de facto toleration: Jews were able to settle, trade, worship privately, and establish a cemetery in London. Menasseh’s mission thus helped lay the foundations of the modern Anglo-Jewish community and became one of the most consequential episodes in the history of seventeenth-century Jewish diplomacy. Dutch "Tolerantie": Noble Virtue or Cold Pragmatism?

Contrary to the modern image of the Dutch Republic as naturally committed to progressive inclusivity, 17th-century Dutch tolerantie was primarily a pragmatic instrument of statecraft. It served commercial interests, protected social stability, and helped preserve the wealth and capital on which the Republic depended. The Union of Utrecht of 1579 established a principle of freedom of conscience (gewetensvrijheid), but this did not amount to modern religious freedom. Non-Calvinist communities generally lacked the right to worship publicly. The Dutch Reformed Church retained a privileged position in public life, while access to civic offices was often restricted to its members. In practice, religious policy frequently operated through gedogen: authorities deliberately refrained from enforcing certain prohibitions when doing so served political or economic interests. Catholics were permitted, under varying local arrangements, to worship discreetly in schuilkerken (“hidden churches”), while authorities could impose fines, fees, or other payments for turning a blind eye. Sephardic Jews brought valuable international commercial networks and capital to the Republic, but their acceptance did not eliminate legal and social restrictions, including limitations on guild membership and civic participation. Religious radicals and outspoken heterodox thinkers could face prosecution when their beliefs or publications were considered threatening to public order, religious authority, or political stability. Dutch toleration was therefore less a straightforward expression of moral egalitarianism than a pragmatic compromise. Authorities tolerated practices they considered economically useful or socially manageable, while suppressing those perceived as destabilizing. The underlying principle was not necessarily “everyone is equal,” but rather: allow difference when repression would cost more than toleration. Dutch tolerantie was, in this sense, a sophisticated mechanism of governance—balancing conscience, commerce, social order, and political power. Willem Arondeus: The Dutch Queer Artist Named Righteous Among the Nations

Willem Arondeus (1894–1943) was an openly gay Dutch artist, writer, and anti-Nazi resistance fighter whose courage made him one of the Netherlands’ most remarkable figures of the Second World War. Rejected by his family because of his sexuality, Arondeus left home at seventeen and went on to establish himself as a painter and author. After Nazi Germany invaded the Netherlands in May 1940, he became increasingly involved in the resistance, helping produce underground publications such as De Brandarisbrief and working with resistance networks that forged identity documents for people targeted by the Nazi occupation. Arondeus became particularly involved in protecting Jewish citizens. He participated in a large-scale forgery operation that produced tens of thousands of falsified identity documents, many designed to avoid the compulsory Nazi “J” stamp that identified Jews and facilitated their persecution and deportation. On March 27, 1943, Arondeus took part in one of the resistance’s most audacious operations: the attack on Amsterdam’s Population Registry (Bevolkingsregister). The objective was to destroy official records that could be used to expose forged identities. Disguised as police officers, the resistance group entered the building, neutralized the guards without killing them, and set incendiary explosives. The resulting fire destroyed or severely damaged hundreds of thousands of municipal records. The operation could not save Arondeus from betrayal. He was arrested on April 1, 1943, and subjected to brutal interrogation. Despite the torture, he attempted to protect his fellow resistance members by taking as much responsibility for the operation as possible. Arondeus was sentenced to death and executed by firing squad on July 1, 1943. According to accounts of his final days, Arondeus asked a friend to tell the world: “Tell people that homosexuals are not cowards.” The words became a powerful testament to his resistance not only to Nazi occupation but also to the prejudice he had faced throughout his life. In 1986, Yad Vashem recognized Willem Arondeus as Righteous Among the Nations for his efforts to save Jews during the Holocaust. His story is unusual in the history of the Dutch resistance: Arondeus fought the Nazi regime as an artist, a homosexual, and a committed resistance activist—and ultimately gave his life attempting to protect people whom the occupation sought to erase from Dutch society. Jacob Israël de Haan: Queer Literature and Jewish Politics

Jacob Israël de Haan (1881–1924) was a Dutch-Jewish poet, novelist, legal scholar, and political activist whose remarkable life connected European literature, queer history, Jewish religious politics, and the turbulent emergence of the modern Middle East. In 1904, De Haan published Pijpelijntjes, one of the earliest Dutch novels to portray homosexual relationships openly. The book provoked a major scandal and severely damaged his literary and teaching career. He later reinvented himself as a legal scholar, earning a doctorate in law in 1916 and developing an early interest in the relationship between language and law. After emigrating to Mandatory Palestine in 1919, De Haan underwent a profound political transformation. Initially sympathetic to Zionism, he became a leading spokesman for the anti-Zionist ultra-Orthodox Edah HaChareidis community. Rather than accepting the Zionist project of establishing a Jewish state, he advocated Jewish communal autonomy within a broader political framework in the Middle East. De Haan pursued direct diplomacy with Arab leaders, including King Hussein of the Hejaz and Emir Abdullah of Transjordan. His efforts to build an alternative Jewish-Arab political arrangement alarmed Zionist leaders, particularly because he was preparing for an important diplomatic mission to London. On June 30, 1924, De Haan was assassinated in Jerusalem by members of the Haganah. His killing became one of the defining political assassinations of the Yishuv and remains deeply controversial. Today, De Haan occupies an unusual place in history: a pioneering queer writer, a religious anti-Zionist, a political dissident, and a martyr whose legacy is claimed by communities with radically different visions of Jewish identity and the Middle East. Erik Hazelhoff Roelfzema: The Soldier of Orange

Erik Hazelhoff Roelfzema (1917–2007), famously known as the “Soldier of Orange,” was one of the Netherlands’ most celebrated World War II resistance fighters, aviators, and authors. Born in Java, Indonesia, Hazelhoff was studying law at Leiden University when Nazi Germany invaded the Netherlands in 1940. He quickly became involved in the resistance, helping author the anti-fascist Leiden Manifesto before escaping to Britain in 1941. There, he worked with British intelligence in Operation Contact Holland, carrying out 15 clandestine missions to Nazi-occupied Netherlands. Agents were landed secretly on the Dutch coast, sometimes with Hazelhoff arriving in the unlikely attire of a formal tuxedo. His war continued in the air. Hazelhoff joined the Royal Air Force as a Pathfinder pilot, flying 72 dangerous combat missions, including 25 over Berlin, in de Havilland Mosquito bombers. He was awarded the Military William Order, the Netherlands’ highest military decoration, and later served as personal aide-de-camp to Queen Wilhelmina during the liberation of the Netherlands. In 1971, while living in Hawaii, Hazelhoff published his bestselling memoir, Soldaat van Oranje. His extraordinary wartime story later inspired Paul Verhoeven’s acclaimed 1977 film and the hugely successful stage musical that became the longest-running theatrical production in Dutch history. Erik Hazelhoff Roelfzema died in 2007 at the age of 90, leaving behind one of the most enduring stories of courage, resistance, and adventure in modern Dutch history.
