A Little Faith, a Lot of Hats, and a Disney Pass with Rev. Dr. Debbie Allen

What happens when God’s call meets a very full calendar? In this episode of Between Here and Calling, Amie sits down with the Reverend Dr. Debbie Allen, a United Methodist pastor, district superintendent, and director of the Office of Clergy Excellence in the Florida Annual Conference, to talk about discerning God’s call, navigating the many demands of ministry and family, and making room for growth and renewal along the way. Debbie shares the story of feeling called to ministry as a high school student, wrestling with messages about women in church leadership, and eventually finding the courage to say yes to a path she hadn’t originally imagined for herself. She reflects on pursuing her Doctor of Ministry while raising three sons and serving in ministry, and why it’s never too late to pursue a long-held dream. Together, Amie and Debbie explore what it means to lead with open hands, remain attentive to the Holy Spirit, and resist the temptation to hold too tightly to our plans. Debbie also shares about mentoring and supporting women in ministry, the importance of community during seasons of uncertainty, and her long-awaited plans for renewal leave after 25 years of pastoral ministry. And because life in ministry isn’t all meetings and discernment, there’s plenty of room for Debbie’s love of reading, her passion for spreadsheets, and her enthusiasm for Disney! In this episode, we talk about: Recognizing and responding to a call that just won’t let goNavigating vocational discernment, family responsibilities, and the realities of ministryPursuing continued education and making space for personal growthSupporting and opening pathways for women in church leadershipLearning to hold our plans loosely and stay open to the unexpectedFinding rest, renewal, and permission to prioritize yourselfLeaning on community and allowing others to carry us through seasons of uncertaintyDebbie leaves us with a powerful reminder for anyone wrestling with what comes next: remember that you are a beloved child of God, find your people, and let them love you. Whether you’re discerning a call to ministry, navigating a new season of leadership, or simply trying to figure out what God might be inviting you into next, we hope this conversation encourages you to keep listening, keep growing, and make a little room to breathe along the way.
