9/11: The Full Story: 102 Minutes of HELL | EP 2

How did the most powerful government in the world respond during the 102 minutes it was under attack, and why does the official record of that morning remain disputed? In Episode 2 of 9/11: The Full Story, host Charles Denyer goes inside the 102 minutes between the first impact at the North Tower at 8:46 a.m. and its collapse at 10:28 a.m. He examines the fractured communications, contested decisions, and gaps in the chain of command that defined the government’s response. At 9:05 a.m., White House Chief of Staff Andrew Card whispered to President George W. Bush that a second plane had hit the World Trade Center. The President remained seated in a second-grade classroom in Sarasota, Florida, for about seven more minutes. His visit had been publicly scheduled, and his location was widely known. This episode looks at why the Secret Service did not move him immediately, and why the 9/11 Commission never fully explained that decision. In Washington, Vice President Dick Cheney was moved to the Presidential Emergency Operations Center beneath the White House. There, an order was issued authorizing the military to shoot down hijacked commercial aircraft. The Commission placed that authorization after United Airlines Flight 93 had already crashed. Accounts from Richard Clarke and Transportation Secretary Norman Mineta suggest a different timeline. The episode also examines the legal authority behind the order, and the unrecorded, joint interview Bush and Cheney gave to the Commission. Finally, the episode turns to NORAD. In the aftermath, the military’s account suggested it had nearly intercepted the hijacked planes. The 9/11 Commission later found that account was contradicted by radar data and communication logs, and no formal accountability followed. Taken together, these moments raise a difficult question: if the chain of command was clear that morning, why is the timeline still disputed more than two decades later? In this episode: The President’s seven minutes in the Emma E. Booker Elementary classroomThe Secret Service’s threat assessment and protective protocolVice President Cheney inside the PEOCThe shoot-down order and its contested timingNorman Mineta’s testimony and Richard Clarke’s accountThe legal authority to engage civilian aircraftThe NORAD and FAA timeline the Commission found inaccurateThe unanswered questions about who was in control, and when Next: Part Three turns to the 9/11 Commission itself: how it was formed, what it uncovered, what it left out, and what its own members later acknowledged about the limits of their findings. #911TheFullStory #September11 #911 #HistoryPodcast #Documentary #InvestigativeJournalism #AmericanHistory #NationalSecurity #NORAD #WarOnTerror

9/11: The Full Story: What the CIA and the FBI Knew Before the Attacks | EP 1

How much was known before September 11, 2001, and why did the warnings fail to prevent the attacks? In Episode 1 of 9/11: The Full Story, host Charles Denyer examines the documented intelligence failures, missed warnings, and decisions that preceded the attacks of September 11, 2001. The official record shows that in the months leading up to 9/11, U.S. intelligence agencies were receiving repeated warnings about Al Qaeda's intention to strike the United States. By the summer of 2001, senior counterterrorism officials were describing the threat environment in increasingly urgent terms. This episode traces several of the most consequential warnings and investigative failures documented before the attacks. Among them was the August 6, 2001 Presidential Daily Brief titled "Bin Laden Determined to Strike in U.S." Weeks earlier, an FBI agent in Phoenix had raised concerns about individuals of investigative interest attending American aviation schools and recommended a broader review. The recommendation was not acted upon. In Minnesota, FBI agents investigating Zacarias Moussaoui became alarmed by his interest in operating large commercial aircraft. Their efforts to search his belongings were blocked at FBI headquarters. At the same time, the CIA had identified future hijackers Nawaf al-Hazmi and Khalid al-Mihdhar in connection with an Al Qaeda meeting overseas. Critical information about the men was not shared with the FBI in time for them to be located and monitored inside the United States. The episode also examines foreign intelligence warnings, Richard Clarke's efforts to elevate the Al Qaeda threat within the White House, and the institutional barriers that prevented separate pieces of intelligence from becoming an actionable warning. Taken individually, each can be described as a failure of process, communication, or judgment. Taken together, they raise a more difficult question: how did so many warnings, across so many agencies, fail at the same time?
