Enter a world of letters, secrets, virtue, temptation, and consequence. The Samuel Richardson Library presents the complete works of one of the great founders of the English novel, read in full. Here are private thoughts committed to paper, hearts tested by love and ambition, and characters forced to choose between desire, duty, reputation, and conscience. From the trials of Pamela to the devastating moral drama of Clarissa, these are stories in which every letter may conceal a motive, reveal a confidence, or alter a life. Attend closely, for in Richardson’s world, the most dangerous battles are often fought upon the page.

  1. Episode 1

Clarissa Harlowe, or the History of a Young Lady Volume 2 Letter I

In which the gentle Clarissa receives a mournful visit from her aunt and sister, who, moved by paternal and familial expectations, earnestly beseech her to consent to a union she abhors; and amidst tender entreaties and bitter reproaches, Clarissa steadfastly maintains her resolution, enduring the anguish of being misunderstood and the weight of imposed duty. The scene closes upon a heart heavy with sorrow and unshed tears, as Clarissa reflects on the unyielding pressures and the uncertain measures her family may yet employ.

  2. Episode 2

Clarissa Harlowe, or the History of a Young Lady Volume 2 Letter II

In which the correspondent, amidst the interruptions and company of her lively cousin and the presence of suitors, reflects with both amusement and seriousness on the character and prospects of an honourable, yet unremarkable gentleman, contrasting him with others more spirited and troublesome. She balances whimsy and concern in her affectionate discourse, promising a more earnest communication when freed from diversions and daily demands.

  3. Episode 3

Clarissa Harlowe, or the History of a Young Lady Volume 2 Letter III

In which a correspondingly affectionate though candid friend counsels Clarissa to assert her just rights with firmness and dignity, cautioning against the dangers of meekness in the face of ungenerous spirits and reflecting on the complexities of family pride and obligation. This epistle, interspersed with pointed observations on character and conduct, gently rebukes certain relations while extolling the virtues of resolution and justice as befit a lady of discernment and principle.
