Why is it hard for black women to genuinely hold friendships| Awa voices| Ep38

In this episode of AWA Voices, Abimbola and yewande are back for another honest, unfiltered mother-daughter conversation about Black women's friendships, sisterhood, generational differences, relationships and the things many women think about but are sometimes afraid to say out loud. From discussing Black girl magic, African and Caribbean sisterhood, and the pressures Black women face, to questioning why some friendships cannot survive honest conversations, this episode gets into what it really means to be a genuine friend. We discuss why some women struggle with confrontation, the difference between being outspoken and disrespectful, setting boundaries, recognising toxic friendships and learning when it is time to walk away. We also get into some controversial conversations: ✦ Are genuine female friendships becoming harder to find? ✦ Why do some women struggle to accept constructive criticism from their friends? ✦ Are we too afraid of being labelled the aggressive Black woman? ✦ Should you stay friends with someone who constantly disrespects others? ✦ Would you leave your holiday behind because your friend was rude to a flight attendant? ✦ What does it really mean to be a girls' girl? ✦ Should friendships involve accountability, honesty and uncomfortable conversations? ✦ Are younger generations better at showing kindness and looking out for other women? ✦ How does growing up being prepared for marriage influence the way women approach relationships? ✦ Does speaking about bad experiences with men automatically make you male-hating or male-centred? One particularly important part of this conversation explores a personal experience involving suspected drink spiking and how a group of young women stepped in to help when they realised something was wrong. A powerful reminder that kindness, sisterhood and looking out for other women still matter. This is more than just a conversation about friendship. It is about self-respect, accountability, boundaries, female solidarity and learning to surround yourself with people who genuinely want to see you grow. WE WANT TO HEAR FROM YOU! Do you think genuine female friendships are harder to maintain nowadays? Would you confront a friend who was behaving badly, or would you quietly walk away? And should loyalty ever mean defending your friend's bad behaviour? Drop your thoughts in the comments. We want to hear your honest opinions! Why are parents taking their children’s SFE| AWA Voices|EP35

Are African parents wrong for asking their children for their Student Finance England (SFE) money? 👀🇬🇧 In this episode of AWA Voices, we’re having an honest, unfiltered mother-daughter conversation about African parenting, student loans, family responsibilities, generational differences, and why communication between African parents and their children can sometimes feel impossible! Student Finance England is meant to help university students cover the costs of higher education and living expenses. But what happens when parents expect their children to hand over that money as soon as it arrives? Should children contribute towards the household, or should their student finance be theirs to manage? We debate whether African parents should ask their children for their SFE money, especially when those students will eventually have to repay their loans. We also discuss the pressure young adults face, the importance of financial planning, and whether parents should teach their children about money instead of relying on them financially. But the conversation doesn't stop there! 😂 We get into why some African parents struggle with patience, why adult children feel misunderstood, how different generations approach life, and whether African parents really listen when their children try to explain themselves. Expect honest opinions, funny disagreements, a hilarious gym-card story, and plenty of moments that might remind you of conversations in your own family! 💬 WE WANT TO HEAR FROM YOU! Do you think African parents should ever ask their university-age children for their Student Finance England money? Should children help their parents financially while studying, or should parents allow them to focus on building their future? Why does Black love feel performative Dating, Expectations Modern Relationships AWA Voices |EP34

On the episode of AWA Voices the question is "Is Black love really harder and performative, or have modern dating expectations made relationships more complicated than they need to be?" In this episode of Our Voices, Yewande and Abibola have a candid, funny and sometimes heated conversation about Black love, dating, relationships, expectations and what it really means to fight for love. The conversation starts with the idea that Black love can feel “performative” and quickly expands into a much bigger discussion: Why do some people believe love has to be difficult? Are we carrying generational trauma into our relationships? Have social media, material expectations and comparison changed the way we date? And do we really need to fight for a relationship—or should love feel mutual and organic? They also discuss: • Why Black love can feel more complicated or performative • Whether people are raised to struggle in relationships • Generational trauma and the importance of unlearning unhealthy patterns • Male-centred and female-centred dating expectations • Whether you should fight for your relationship or walk away • Why love alone may not be enough to sustain a relationship • Unrealistic expectations in modern dating • Social media, luxury gifts and comparing your relationship to others • The pressure surrounding money, lifestyle and material things • Why “Chanel” becomes a symbol for unrealistic expectations • Black men and Black women’s expectations of each other • Therapy, healing and taking personal responsibility • How friendship circles can influence the way we think about relationships • Why people may be increasingly reluctant to date • Whether people have simply become “lazy” when it comes to love This isn't a conversation with one simple answer. It's a debate about love, culture, expectations, healing and modern relationships and the panel doesn't always agree. 💬 What do you think? Is Black love genuinely more complicated, or are we putting too many expectations on relationships? Should you fight for a relationship when things get difficult, or should love be allowed to happen naturally? And why do you think so many people are struggling with dating today? Let us know your thoughts in the comments. Subscribe to AWA Voices for more honest conversations about relationships, culture, identity, dating and life. Why Does Everyone Have A Problem With The UK Black Girl Aesthetic?| EP33

Is the “UK Black Girl Aesthetic” really a problem or are we simply putting labels on Black women who love to look good? In this episode of AWA Voices, Yawanda and Abinbola get into a heated conversation about the viral “UK Black Girl Aesthetic,” from bust-down wigs, makeup and fashion to social-media beauty standards, comparison, validation and the pressure to fit into a particular image. They question why this particular aesthetic receives so much criticism and whether calling it out is actually putting Black women down. They also discuss the idea that “we all look the same underneath the makeup,” why facial features and complexions are different, and how hair, fashion and beauty trends can sometimes make people appear similar   without making them the same. The conversation also explores: • What exactly is the UK Black Girl Aesthetic? • Why do Black women get labelled by the way they dress? • Are wigs, makeup and fashion really what define the aesthetic? • Why do people compare themselves to women on Instagram? • Is social-media validation influencing beauty standards? • Why do so many women shop at the same places and follow similar beauty trends? • Does the aesthetic come from culture, family and upbringing? • Why is looking good sometimes treated negatively? • The relationship between confidence, comparison and self-esteem Yawanda and Abinbola also talk about the wider issue of labels and why women should be able to express themselves without being placed into a box. Watch until the end and let us know: What do YOU think about the UK Black Girl Aesthetic? Is it simply a style, or has social media turned it into something much bigger? ❤️ If you enjoyed this episode, don't forget to LIKE, COMMENT, SUBSCRIBE and SHARE. #AWAVoices #UKBlackGirlAesthetic #BlackWomen #BlackGirlAesthetic #UKBlackGirls #BlackBeauty #BeautyStandards #BlackCulture #SocialMedia #BlackWomenInTheUK

WHEN IS ENOUGH ENOUG? | Knowing When to Leave a Relationship | AWA Voices|EP32

When is enough REALLY enough? 🚩 Knowing when to leave a relationship isn't always easy. Sometimes we stay because we're comfortable, hopeful, attached or simply afraid of what comes next. But what happens when the red flags become impossible to ignore? In this episode of AWA Voices, Yewande and Abimbola get REAL about relationships, dating standards, knowing when to walk away, and why so many people stay in situations that no longer serve them. From spotting changes in a partner's behaviour and recognising when your values no longer align, to the importance of physical attraction and dating standards, this conversation goes EVERYWHERE. 😂 And then things take a hilarious turn… 💋 Can a bad first kiss be a dealbreaker? 🦷 Why do so many men apparently struggle with oral hygiene? 🚩 When should you stop giving someone the benefit of the doubt? ❤️ Can you have a long-term relationship with someone you're not physically attracted to? 🍳 Why are some grown men unable to cook or clean for themselves? ❄️ Are people really going back to their exes because winter is coming? 📱 Is the September “lock-in” actually necessary? 🌱 When is it time to leave a job, friendship, relationship or even family? The girls also discuss the importance of being observant when dating, paying attention to patterns rather than isolated incidents, and refusing to gaslight yourself when something clearly doesn't feel right. As the final quarter of the year begins, the conversation turns to self-improvement, discipline, personal growth and knowing when it's time to move on. And yes… there is also a LOT of talk about “turkey teeth,” terrible kissing and men who expect women to cook and clean for them. 😭😂 🎙️ Welcome back to AWA Voices, your favourite mother-daughter podcast.
