    Autumn, 17th-century England. When parish constable Edwin Rook and his companion Jacob Mercer arrest Elspeth Blackwood for witchcraft, there is little question of her guilt. She confesses almost immediately, calmly admitting that she has called things from places no Christian man should ever look. Their task should be simple: deliver her to the magistrates in the neighbouring town before dawn. But the quickest route takes them along Poor Hole Lane — an abandoned road built beside forgotten Black Death burial pits and later used as the execution ground for three accused witches. One was hanged. One drowned. One burned. And all three were left beside the road as a warning. As darkness falls and the autumn drizzle settles over the countryside, Edwin and Jacob discover that the dead have never truly left Poor Hole Lane.
