Writing About Mortality and Medicine with Lewis K. Schrager

Lewis K. Schrager is a physician, medical researcher, and author based in North Bethesda. His second novel, The Blood of the Land tells the story of a Madagascar-born, American-trained physician who arrives in the remote highlands of Madagascar to treat an outbreak of plague. In Schrager's first novel, The Radical Radiance of the Fishing Fly, a measured and introverted man accompanies his spontaneous and domineering brother, who had just recovered from cancer, on a fly fishing trip in the Alaskan wilderness. Lewis and I talk about how working as a physician at the epicenter of the HIV/AIDS Epidemic in 1980s New York City gave him a unique outlook on life and death, how he drew inspiration for his newest novel and protagonist, and his process for storytelling, character-creation, and editing.
