The Power of A.L.T.s: Why You Should Never Be Afraid to Spot an Animal on Safari

What happens when a rock looks like a lion, a log resembles a leopard, and a guest becomes too embarrassed to point out the next suspicious shape? In this episode of Beyond the Game Drive, safari guide Kiarie Mathaga explores A.L.T.s—Animal-Like Things—and explains why these false alarms are more than amusing safari moments. Drawing on a real encounter in Tsavo West National Park, Kiarie shares how one guest’s persistence led to a brief encounter with a shy leopard that might otherwise have gone unnoticed. Discover why guests should speak up even when uncertain, how experienced guides can overlook things, and why curiosity is one of the most valuable qualities you can bring on safari. The lesson: You don’t have to identify every animal. Sometimes, you just need to notice something and say so. Beyond the Game Drive explores the people, decisions and experiences that shape a safari beyond the animals themselves. This is a public episode. Don’t Become the Photographer’s Problem

A great wildlife photograph can depend on seconds, positioning, light, animal behaviour—and sometimes the decisions made from the driver’s seat. But what does a photographer actually need from a safari guide? And what does a guide need from a photographer? In this episode of Beyond the Game Drive, Kiarie explores the relationship between safari guides and wildlife photographers from both sides. We look at vehicle positioning, composition, light, anticipation, communication, shared game drives, safety, and the importance of giving wildlife enough space to behave naturally. Through real safari situations, including a leopard hunting a warthog, active predator hunts, and a buffalo encounter with a poorly positioned vehicle, we explore what happens when guides fail to read the whole scene. Because the photographer sees the frame. The guide needs to see everything outside the frame. And professional cooperation means understanding both. Key Lessons * Vehicle positioning can make or break a wildlife photograph. * Closer is not always better. * Guides should communicate before moving whenever circumstances allow. * During active hunts, unnecessary vehicle movement should generally be minimized. * Wildlife needs space to behave naturally. * Photographers must also understand safety, other guests, and other vehicles. * The guide is responsible for seeing the entire situation, not just the photographic frame. * Professional guiding is built on judgement, communication and cooperation. The Question Have you ever missed an important wildlife photograph because of a vehicle positioning decision? What happened? And if you’re a safari guide: what do you wish photographers understood about what you’re seeing from the driver’s seat? Share your experience. What Makes a Great Safari Guide?

What actually makes a professional safari guide? Is it knowing every animal in the park? Knowing every road? Finding the Big Five? Or is great guiding about something much deeper? In this first episode of Beyond the Game Drive, Kiarie explores the three levels of professional safari guiding: Foundation — Can you guide safely and professionally? Excellence — Can you create an exceptional safari? Mastery — Can you transform how someone experiences Africa? We look beyond wildlife identification and explore observation, interpretation, storytelling, guest care, safety, ethical decision-making, adaptability and the ability to know when to speak—and when to let the wilderness speak for itself. Because knowledge is important. But knowledge alone doesn’t make a great guide. A competent guide takes you to wildlife. An excellent guide helps you understand wildlife. A master guide changes the way you see the wilderness. In This Episode * What really makes a great safari guide? * Knowledge is only the beginning * Foundation: professional competence * Excellence: creating exceptional safari experiences * Reading wildlife, landscapes and guests * Mastery: changing how people experience Africa * Knowing when not to intervene * Why knowledge is an input, not the destination * The three levels of professional guiding * The real responsibility of a safari guide Key Ideas * Wildlife knowledge is necessary, but it isn’t sufficient. * Safety and professionalism are foundational. * Exceptional guiding requires observation, interpretation, and judgement. * Every guest experiences the wilderness differently. * Great guides can create meaningful experiences beyond the Big Five. * Ethical guiding sometimes means choosing not to intervene. * Mastery is about changing how a guest sees the wilderness. The Question What do you believe is the single most important quality of a great safari guide? Join the conversation and share your experience. When the Hill Says No: A Safari Guide’s Lesson in 4x4 Driving

A steep climb, a Toyota Land Cruiser 79 Series, a guest on board, and a lesson from more than 14 years ago that suddenly became very relevant. In this short field episode of Beyond the Game Drive, Kiarie shares what happened while driving towards Lentorre after taking a detour around Lake Magadi in Kenya. The detour delivered beautiful views of smaller soda lakes and an unexpected flamingo sighting. But the route also presented a seriously degraded, steep climb. Driving in low-range second gear, the Land Cruiser began losing momentum halfway up the hill and needed first gear. That created an important decision: how do you safely deal with a gear change when you’re already committed to an extremely steep climb? Kiarie explains the lesson he learned early in his guiding career, why controlled vehicle positioning matters, how low-range first gear helps, and why terrain assessment should happen before you commit to an obstacle. But this isn’t simply a 4x4 driving lesson. It is also a lesson in professional safari guiding. When you have a guest in your vehicle, the goal isn’t to prove what your Land Cruiser can do. The goal is to make sound decisions, manage risk, and get everyone safely through the terrain. In this episode: * Driving a Toyota Land Cruiser 79 Series off-road * Low-range gearing and steep climbs * Why changing gears on a severe climb can become dangerous * Reading terrain before committing to an obstacle * Managing momentum and vehicle control * The responsibility of carrying safari guests * Knowing when to stop, turn around or find another route * Why vehicle capability should never replace good judgment Beyond the Game Drive explores what really happens beyond the wildlife sightings: the decisions, skills, stories, ethics, and experiences that shape professional safari guiding across Africa. When Safari Becomes a Race

A river crossing begins. A predator makes a kill. Suddenly, vehicles start moving, and what should be a wildlife observation can become a race for position. In this episode of Beyond the Game Drive, we look at the growing pressure around wildlife sightings in the Maasai Mara, particularly during wildebeest river crossings and predator kills. Why do experienced guides sometimes rush towards sightings? How does fear of missing out influence decisions in the field? And where is the line between good positioning, giving guests a memorable experience, and becoming part of the disturbance? As a safari guide, I believe our responsibility goes beyond finding wildlife and getting guests close to it. Professional safari guiding means reading the animals, understanding the environment, respecting other vehicles, managing guest expectations and knowing when not to move closer. This isn’t simply a conversation about bad driving. It is a conversation about safari guiding ethics, wildlife viewing etiquette, professionalism and the kind of safari culture we want to create in East Africa. Because being first doesn’t necessarily make you the best guide. Sometimes, the most professional thing you can do on safari is simply take your foot off the accelerator. This is a public episode. When a Sighting Becomes a Disturbance

It should have been one of those unforgettable Amboseli National Park wildlife encounters. Instead, it became an uncomfortable lesson about wildlife disturbance, safari vehicle behaviour, photography, and professional safari guiding. In this episode of Beyond the Game Drive, I take you into a real encounter from Amboseli, Kenya, where a lioness appeared to be trying to move her cubs and an aardvark kill towards the bushes near the swamp. As safari vehicles gathered and competed for position, the animals appeared increasingly unsettled. The cubs moved away, the lioness repeatedly left the kill to retrieve them, and vehicles continued following her movements. At what point does watching wildlife become interfering with wildlife? And what responsibility do safari guides have when guests, photographers, and other vehicles are pushing for the perfect sighting? This episode explores: * Responsible wildlife viewing in Kenya * Wildlife disturbance and animal behaviour around safari vehicles * Professional safari guiding and guide ethics * Safari photography and the pursuit of the perfect shot * Vehicle positioning during sensitive wildlife encounters * How guides should manage guest expectations * Why young animals require additional consideration * When a safari guide should back off or leave a sighting * The difference between finding wildlife and responsibly guiding people around wildlife * A practical code of conduct for professional safari guides This isn’t about attacking fellow guides. It’s about having an honest conversation within the safari industry about professionalism, ethics, and our responsibility to the wildlife we have the privilege of showing people. Because a great safari isn’t simply about getting close. It’s about allowing wildlife to remain wild while we are there. Beyond the Game Drive is produced by Wild Extracts, exploring wildlife, safari guiding, conservation, travel, and the stories that exist beyond the traditional game drive, with a particular focus on Kenya and East Africa. The sighting is never more important than the animal. This is a public episode.
