Challenges of Change on a Small Farm (with Ryan Caron)

Ryan Caron joins me once more to talk about innovation and change happening in farming communities. We talk through how it's often not lack of desire to innovate but rather the lack of infrastructure and systems to support it. Ryan also makes the case for embracing native plants as food sources, learning about the ways your family has engaged with food and experimenting where we can. Homework this month: What was a former crop or industry in your area? When did it start? Does it still exist? If it doesn't, what happened? What were some Indigenous food traditions in your area? The Tyee article mentioned in the intro lastditch.ca

Honey as Cultural Infrastructure (with Ryan Caron)

Ryan Caron had an upbringing that used to be way more common: growing up on a farm. Ryan and I meet in a local community garden to discuss what was unique about the way of life in a small agricultural community in Northern Alberta. We talk through the highs, the lows, and how growing and collecting food wasn't always something he enjoyed. While we might have our own ideas of small farming communities, Ryan makes the case for "cultural infrastructure" and why we need each other, particularly if we're harvesting anything.

What the Birds Are Telling You

This episode is all about the birds that visit your garden and what they can tell you about your local ecosystem. Whether you're trying to attract more birds or simply give a wing up to those who already call your garden home, we talk through how birds can benefit you and how you can benefit them.
