Why "Follow the Child" Doesn't Contradict Obedience — It Prepares for It

Why "Follow the Child" Doesn't Contradict Obedience — It Prepares for It If you've ever montessorians say "follow the child" and wondered whether that's just permissive parenting in disguise — you're not alone. It might be the most misunderstood phrase in Montessori education, and in this second episode of Raising Saints, we're taking it head-on. We walk through Maria Montessori's own four habits behind "following the child" — and show how each one is quietly building toward what she called the third, joyful level of obedience: a child who obeys not because she has no choice, but because she's learned how to choose well. Along the way we bring in Zacchaeus, the Catechism on freedom and the Ten Commandments, and Fr. Dolindo Ruotolo's prayer of abandonment — because the pattern we find in a Montessori environment turns out to be the same pattern we live in our life of faith. What you'll hear: The four pillars, in one line: See her. Trust her. Set real limits. Step back. Why "freedom within limits" was never permissivenessHow a child's will has to be built before it can be freely surrenderedWhy the Ten Commandments function as a "spiritual prepared environment"Real Montessori. Real faith. Real life. Let's get into it.
