I Love You. Now Could You Please Do the Washing?

On today’s episode of Before Elle Out Loud, we’re talking about something rather important. Love. Not the grand romantic gestures, candlelit dinners or the sort of love where someone dramatically runs through an airport. I’m talking about the everyday kind. The messy, imperfect, occasionally frustrating kind. The kind that helps you up the stairs at night but somehow fails to notice the mountain of washing sitting in plain sight. Because when chronic illness enters a relationship, things can become a little more complicated. Today, we’re talking about what happens when the person you love also becomes someone you depend on. The gratitude that comes with being cared for, the guilt that sometimes follows, and the frustration of wanting to remain independent when your body has other ideas. We’re also talking about the things that don’t get discussed nearly enough. How illness changes intimacy, how both partners can become exhausted, why it’s perfectly possible to be grateful and annoyed at the same time, and how important it is to remember that underneath all the appointments, responsibilities and everyday chaos, you’re still two people who love each other. And because this is Before Elle, there will naturally be a little humour along the way. Mostly involving laundry. A little note before you listen Before Elle Out Loud is still very much a work in progress. I’m learning this whole podcasting business as I go. There may be the occasional stumble, an awkward pause or a moment when I sound as though I’ve temporarily forgotten how sentences work. I’m only human, and this is my rather enthusiastic attempt at figuring out microphones, editing and sharing a little more of myself with the world. So please be gentle with me while I find my feet. What I can promise is that every episode comes from a genuine place, even if the production department (me, with a cup of tea and several open browser tabs) is still finding its rhythm. Come and stay a little longer If today’s conversation resonates with you, I’d love to hear your thoughts in the comments. And if you’re new here, welcome. You can subscribe to Before Elle right here on Substack for personal essays, our weekly Sunday Tea, more episodes of Before Elle Out Loud and honest conversations about chronic illness, motherhood, identity and the unexpected business of starting again. You can also visit beforeelle.com, our little corner of the internet, where there’s always room for one more. Thank you for listening, for being here, and for giving this slightly imperfect podcast a chance. Now, if you’ll excuse me, I believe there’s still a domestic investigation underway. A Halloween Pause: Samhain Intentions & Meditation

Come in. Make yourself comfortable. I’ve made something a little different for you this Halloween. With Samhain approaching, I’ve been thinking a lot about the things we carry, the lives we thought we’d have, and how difficult it can sometimes feel to imagine a beautiful future when life hasn’t quite gone to plan. Samhain is an old seasonal tradition associated with the end of the harvest, the beginning of winter and the idea of letting go before something new can begin. And I rather like that thought. So, instead of our usual conversation, I’m inviting you to spend twelve quiet minutes with me. There’s gentle piano music, a little reflection, some affirmations and a chance to put down a few things that might have become rather heavy. We’ll explore gratitude, self-worth, abundance and allowing ourselves to dream again. Because wanting more from life doesn’t mean we’re ungrateful for the life we already have. And abundance can mean so many things. Love, peace, financial security, meaningful work, or simply having enough energy left at the end of the day to enjoy a cup of tea while it’s still hot. A rather ambitious dream in itself sometimes. You don’t need to believe in manifestation or have everything figured out. There’s nothing you need to achieve in these twelve minutes. A little confession before we begin. This is my very first attempt at recording a guided meditation, so please be gentle with me. There may be a slightly wobbly word or two along the way, but it’s been made with a lot of love and good intentions. And really, if we’re going to practise letting go of perfection, I might as well start with myself. So find somewhere comfortable, settle in, let your shoulders soften if they can, and give yourself permission to be exactly where you are. And if you need to come back to this another day, long after Halloween has passed, it’ll be here waiting for you. Life looks different now. You still belong in it. I’m Tired of Being Told I’m Strong

There’s something lovely about being told you’re strong. Until you’ve heard it so many times that you start wondering whether you’re actually allowed to be anything else. Because sometimes I don’t feel strong. Sometimes I’m tired, frustrated, overwhelmed and would quite happily hand in my resignation from being the resilient one. Preferably with two weeks’ notice and a decent cup of tea. In today’s episode of Before Elle Out Loud, I’m talking about the strange weight of being called strong when you’re living with chronic illness, navigating motherhood and trying to make sense of a life that looks rather different from the one you imagined. About the pressure to keep going, the guilt of needing help, and why sometimes the kindest thing someone can say isn’t “You’re so strong.” It’s simply, “That sounds really hard. How are you doing?” So pop the kettle on, find somewhere comfortable and come and sit with me for a little while. You don’t have to be the strong one here. Love,Elle x Before Elle Out Loud is a little corner of the internet for honest conversations about chronic illness, motherhood, identity and finding your way through a life you didn’t quite plan. If something in today’s episode feels familiar, I’d love to hear from you in the comments. And if you know someone who’s tired of being the strong one, perhaps share this episode with them. Sometimes knowing we’re not the only one makes all the difference. Life looks different now. You still belong in it. This is a public episode. My Brain Still Makes Plans My Body Hasn’t Agreed To

There is a woman living inside my head who is absolutely thriving. She has plans. So many plans. She thinks we’re going to clean the kitchen, answer some emails, take Teddy somewhere lovely, record a podcast, make a proper dinner and perhaps reorganise a cupboard for reasons nobody understands. My body, meanwhile, is looking at this itinerary thinking: That’s adorable. This week on Before Elle Out Loud, I’m talking about one of the strangest parts of becoming chronically ill: my ambition didn’t disappear just because my capacity changed. I still want things. I still make plans. I still wake up imagining everything I could fit into a day. And then there’s the slightly less glamorous business of negotiating those plans with a body that has developed some very firm opinions of its own. It’s about the frustration of wanting more than your body can give you, the guilt that can creep in when plans change, and what I’m slowly learning about building a life around what I can do rather than constantly measuring myself against what I used to be able to do. Because maybe changing the plan isn’t the same thing as giving up. Maybe I’m still the same woman. Just moving at a different pace. 🎧 Press play above and come sit with me for a little while. If Before Elle has become somewhere you return to, The Kitchen Table is the paid side of this little world. If you’d like to come a little closer, there’s a chair waiting for you. And if this is something you recognise in your own life, I’d love to know: does your brain still make plans your body hasn’t agreed to? This is a public episode.
