Pierre Basson: The Insurance Killer — South Africa’s First Documented Serial Killer?

In 1906, police in Cape Town were investigating a disturbing mystery involving a missing farmer, suspicious deaths and life-insurance policies. At the centre of the investigation was Pierre Basson, a money lender who became notorious for his alleged involvement in a series of deaths connected to insurance and financial dealings. Basson had already attracted attention after his younger brother, Jasper, disappeared during a fishing trip. A substantial life-insurance policy was at the centre of the case. Years later, Basson became connected to a number of suspicious deaths — and then another man disappeared. When police began searching Basson’s property in Claremont, they were looking for the missing farmer, Wilhelm Schaefer. What they discovered would make the Basson case one of the most notorious early murder investigations in South African history. Basson never stood trial. Before investigators could complete their case, he took his own life. How many people did he actually kill? Which deaths can be conclusively attributed to him? And was Pierre Basson really South Africa’s first documented serial killer? More than a century later, some of those questions remain unanswered. This episode examines the evidence, the historical accounts and the unanswered questions surrounding Pierre Basson — the man remembered as the “Insurance Killer.” 🎙️ True Crime and Scams in South Africa Real cases.
