Your Opponent Isn't the Enemy. Your Story Is. | Competition As a Coming Together - Turning Opponents Into Partners

What if the person across the net isn't your enemy, but your partner? In this episode, Randall Scott challenges one of the least questioned ideas in competitive sport: the story that your opponent is the enemy. Drawing on more than three decades of coaching, he shows how the language of war ("fight," "attack," "destroy," "go to war with this guy") shapes the way players see the game. He also explains how that story quietly adds tension, anxiety and over-effort to their tennis. The word competition comes from the Latin competere, which means "to come together." Two players, one game, one dance. When you stop seeing your opponent as a threat and start seeing him as part of your path, you don't become less competitive. You become less divided.Randall explores why "twoness," the feeling of me versus him, is an illusion, while the game itself is oneness. He shows what a tango can teach us about competition, and how the obstacle becomes the path when your opponent becomes your teacher. Along the way he looks at the paradox of great competition through Federer and Nadal's 2008 Wimbledon final. He also shares Leo's story, from a ranking around 900 to NCAA titles and the ATP Tour, and the Taoist idea of Wu Wei: stop fighting the game. Then he gets practical, with nine tools for removing the "enemy story," including the 4 A Process, using the 83% between points, and treating your opponent as information. He closes by revealing the real opponent: not the person across the net, but the story you're telling about him.SUBSCRIBE & SHARE if this way of seeing the game resonates with you — and let's keep exploring the other 83%, together.────────────────────THE BOOK The Inner Way of Tennis – Sport & Life Playing the Game From Inside Out by Randall D.
