Those Left Behind

James Beckley

Those Left Behind is a warm, honest podcast about grief, memory and the people we carry with us after they’re gone. Each episode is a relaxed conversation about who someone lost, what grief was really like, what helped, what didn’t, and the little things that still bring that person back. The tone is emotional but not bleak — reflective, human and full of love, humour and memory.

'The Most Beautiful Smile' Claire Remembers Natalie

In this episode of Those Left Behind, James talks to Claire about her daughter, Natalie, whose life was taken suddenly by meningococcal septicaemia in December 2015. Claire talks about how quickly an illness that initially seemed ordinary became something devastating, the questions and guilt that can follow such a sudden loss, and the unbearable reality of trying to understand how life can change in just a few hours. But this is not simply a conversation about how Natalie died. It is about the girl her family describe as happy, funny, kind and full of life — with a “radiant infectious smile”, a huge heart, and a future full of plans. Claire also talks about the messages the family received after Natalie’s death from people whose lives she had touched, and how grief has since become intertwined with a determination to raise awareness of meningococcal disease and help prevent other families experiencing the same devastation. A deeply moving conversation about sudden loss, parenthood, memory, and keeping Natalie’s light shining. "Always Part Of The Family". Sabrina remembers Leo.

When a mother’s gut says something is wrong, what happens when the system doesn’t listen? Sabrina shares the heartbreaking story of losing her son Leo at 32 weeks, and the devastating days, questions, and silence that followed.Host James Beckley sits with Sabrina for a raw, compassionate conversation about stillbirth, self-blame, and the different ways parents grieve the same child. Sabrina opens up about the moment she knew Leo wasn’t moving, the shock of being told there was no heartbeat, and the unimaginable reality of going home still carrying her baby before returning to give birth to him days later. You’ll hear how grief touched every part of her life, from shutting down emotionally to trying to stay strong for her two daughters, and why she and her husband Craig coped so differently in the aftermath. Sabrina also shares the memories that matter most: holding Leo, dressing him, taking a photo, and making sure he was surrounded by love in his brief time earthside. We break down the guilt that can haunt bereaved parents for years, the weight of being told you’re “lucky” to have other children, and why phrases like “it wasn’t meant to be” can cut deeper than people realize. Sabrina also reflects on the support that helped her survive, including writing to Leo, and the annual family tradition that keeps his memory alive. This episode contains open discussion of stillbirth and baby loss. It’s essential listening for anyone navigating pregnancy after loss, supporting a grieving parent, or wanting a deeper understanding of what baby loss really looks like inside a family. Leo is remembered here not for how he died, but for how deeply he was loved.
