    About My Father's Business

Luke's Gospel follows Christ's journey from Galilee to Jerusalem, and the story of the boy Jesus in the temple already traces it. His three-day absence in 2:46 foreshadows the tomb. The story shows Mary, and us, what it means to seek him.

  2. 12/28/1997

    Simeon and Anna

Simeon is a baffling figure, and in him and Anna the law and the prophets meet. Anna comes from the tribe of Asher and Simeon carries a tribe's name, and both tribes mean something. Luke 9:23-27 shows the cost of the salvation they waited for.

  3. 12/24/1997

    Born Outside the Land

Israel's restoration to Judea after the exile was never final, because the heavenly kingdom is final. Christ comes into the world under Caesar's decree, in a land still under Rome's rule. His birth carries three things with it.

  4. 12/21/1997

    His Name Is John

Zacharias and Elizabeth stand for Israel, and Luke 1:57-80 falls into four parts. Naming the child John breaks with family custom, as the old gives way to the new. God opens Zacharias's mouth and he sings, and 1:80 shows the law serving the gospel.

  5. 12/14/1997

My Soul Doth Magnify the Lord

Elizabeth is Israel in her glory and her shame at once. Luke 1:39-56 moves in four stages: Mary's journey, her reception, her song, and her service to Elizabeth. In Mary's song the New Testament overtakes the Old.

  6. 12/07/1997

    The Babe Leaped for Joy

Throughout Luke, Christ blesses women with a new liberty and dignity. The New Testament uses women to teach about Christ, and Elizabeth and Mary show how. When Mary greets her, the child in Elizabeth's womb leaps for joy.
