The Big Picture

UTSAB PANDEY

The Big Picture is a podcast about seeing things differently. We often think we understand people, success, leadership, reality, and even ourselves but what if we’re only seeing one small part of the picture? Through everyday stories, philosophy, psychology, business, and personal experiences, The Big Picture explores the ideas hiding underneath ordinary life. No complicated theories. No pretending to have all the answers. Just curious questions, different perspectives, and conversations that might make you stop and think: “Wait… I never looked at it that way before.” Because sometimes, seeing the bigger picture changes everything.

11 Years in New Zealand: What It's Really Like

Got something to say to this podcast? Send a voicemail, and you might hear yourself on the next episode! Living in New Zealand: I came here from Nepal in 2015 as an international student. Eleven years and six cities later, this is the honest version: the places I loved, the moments I'll never forget, what surprised me, and what I'd tell you before you visit or move. In this video: • New Plymouth, Taupō, Wellington, Tauranga, Queenstown and Christchurch, through my own story • The 2016 Kaikōura earthquake, felt from Wellington • What people actually earn, and why "beautiful scenery doesn't pay the rent" • Four tips for visiting and three for moving • Who New Zealand is (and isn't) for CHAPTERS 0:00 Haka + this video in 10 seconds 0:16 11 years, 6 places 1:27 Why New Zealand? 1:53 New Plymouth (2015–2016) 4:02 Taupō (2016) 6:09 Wellington (2016) 8:10 Tauranga (2017–2018) 9:23 Queenstown (2018–2019) 11:15 Christchurch (2019–now) 13:36 Advice for visiting and moving 16:58 Who is New Zealand for? 18:14 To my 2015 self 18:51 Your turn THE PRACTICAL TAKEAWAY Visiting: give yourself time, budget properly, book popular Great Walks early, and remember that many of the best things are free. AI Isn't Firing You. It's Doing Something Else.

Got something to say to this podcast? Send a voicemail, and you might hear yourself on the next episode! AI isn't firing people. It's quietly not hiring them. Almost four years after ChatGPT, the measured data tells a very different story from the headlines. In this episode of The Big Picture, I separate what's been PREDICTED from what's actually been MEASURED. What did "300 million jobs" really mean? Why are radiologists in short supply, ten years after Geoffrey Hinton said to stop training them? And why are 22-25-year-olds in AI-exposed jobs the group that's actually feeling it? We look at history (ATMs, telephone operators, spreadsheets, translators), check in on New Zealand and Australia, and finish with a six-question test you can run on your own job. ⏱️ CHAPTERS 0:00 This video in 10 seconds 0:12 The prediction that failed 0:47 The scary numbers 1:42 What "exposed" really means 3:14 History lesson: the ATM 3:51 What has actually happened 6:54 Why young people? 9:05 So why was Hinton wrong? 10:23 Closer to home: NZ & Australia 11:07 Test your own job 12:47 The case that I'm too calm 14:32 Where I land + 3 things to do 🧭 TEST YOUR OWN JOB (a thinking aid assembled from several studies, not a validated tool) List 5-10 tasks you do each week. For each one, ask: 1. Is it done entirely on a screen? 2. Does it need hands, a body, or being with people? 3. Is it clean (a clear right answer) or messy (a judgement call)? 4. Does AI replace you on it, or make you better? 5. Does AI make your skill rarer, or let anyone do it? 6. When it goes wrong, is a human accountable? Bonus: are you early in your career? 💬 My question for you: which task in your job will AI take first, and which will it never touch? I Haven’t Worn Matching Socks Since Year 5. Here’s Why.

Got something to say to this podcast? Send a voicemail, and you might hear yourself on the next episode! 90% of the time, my socks don't match. And it all started one morning in Year 5, standing at the front of the school assembly line. In this Episode, I go back to that morning and ask a simple question: was that moment the reason I wear odd socks today, or is it just a story I tell myself? Along the way we look at the psychology of memory, shame, peer pressure and identity, and what it really means to be yourself in a crowd. If you've ever been the kid standing at the front, this one is for you.
