Solvent vs Solventless: Which is better?

“Solventless” has become shorthand for “premium,” and “BHO” gets dismissed as “cheap” far too often. We’re not buying that oversimplification. Lady Lex breaks down what solvent-based extraction and solventless processing actually mean, starting with a grounding rule you can use forever: all extracts are concentrates, but not all concentrates are extracts. Once you understand that umbrella, the rest of the debate gets a lot easier to navigate. Definitions: Solvent-based = Chemical solvent utilized to extract components from cannabis, and then purged from the final product. Solventless = No use of chemical extracts. However water is used in the process and water is technically a solvent.  We walk through how BHO and other solvent-based methods use a solvent as a separation tool to pull cannabinoids and terpenes from plant material, then rely on post-processing and lab testing to meet regulated standards. That control is a big reason hydrocarbon concentrates show up in so many forms and textures, from sauce to sugar to diamonds. Then we shift to solventless concentrates like rosin, where heat, pressure, water, and mechanical separation can highlight the character of the starting material, but often demand higher-quality inputs and serious skill. From there, we get practical: yield affects production, availability, and price, and “more expensive” still doesn’t guarantee “more enjoyable.” Flavor, texture, consistency, and budget matter, so the smarter question isn’t “which is best,” it’s “best for what?” If you’ve ever stood at the counter staring at labels, this conversation gives you a clear framework to choose confidently. What is BHO? BHO Demystified.

BHO gets tossed around like everyone already knows what it means, but the letters can trigger an instant reaction: “Wait, is there butane in this?” We take that fear head-on and replace it with clarity. Lady Lex explains BHO as butane hash oil, where butane is used as a solvent during the extraction process to separate valuable compounds from the cannabis plant, not as something manufacturers want lingering in the final concentrate. We zoom in on what’s actually being captured during extraction: cannabinoids like THC and CBD, plus the terpenes that shape aroma and flavor, stored in the resinous trichomes that sparkle on cannabis flower. From there, we connect the dots between the initial extract and the wide world of concentrate textures. Batter, sugar, crumble, sauce, and shatter can come from the same general hydrocarbon extraction “family,” and the differences often come down to post-processing choices like temperature and agitation that shape consistency and appearance. Then we get practical about safety and compliance. Properly manufactured BHO goes through purging to remove residual solvents, followed by regulated lab testing that can include potency, contaminants, and residual solvent testing to confirm the product meets required limits. If you’ve ever wondered what you’re really buying when you pick up a concentrate jar, this is your roadmap from plant to finished product. What Makes a Good Cannabis Concentrate?

If you’ve ever pointed at a jar and said “I’ll take the 92%,” you’re not alone but you might be leaving the best part of the story on the shelf. We kick things off with a simple thought experiment: two BHO concentrates, one labeled 92% THC and the other 76%, and nothing else. Which one is better? That question opens the door to a bigger, more useful way to judge cannabis concentrates without turning potency into a scoreboard.  We walk through what actually signals quality in BHO: aroma that hits before anything else, terpene profiles that shape flavor, and why two concentrates with similar THC can smell and taste totally different. We also dig into the parts consumers rarely see but always feel in the final product, including starting material quality, processing decisions, storage, texture, and the hard-to-fake craft of making great batches consistently. Then we zoom out to the non-negotiables: regulated testing, residual solvents, and why “premium” has to mean more than a pretty photo and a big number.  Finally, we land on the variable no label can capture: you. Once a product meets real safety and manufacturing standards, personal preference becomes a huge piece of what “good” means, whether you prioritize flavor, potency, ease of handling, or the experience you’re chasing. If you want smarter questions to ask at the counter and a clearer definition of premium cannabis concentrates, hit play, subscribe, and leave a review with your take: what matters most to you when choosing BHO? BHO Concentrates Explained — Badder, Shatter, Sugar, Sauce & More

Why can one type of cannabis concentrate look like glass, another like cake batter, and another like wet sugar? In the first episode of Planet 13 Education Station, we’re diving into the world of BHO cannabis concentrates and answering one of the biggest questions consumers have: What’s actually different about all these forms? Badder (or batter), shatter, crumble, sugar, sauce — they may all fall under the BHO concentrate umbrella, but their textures, consistencies, terpene profiles, handling characteristics, and overall experiences can vary. We break down why BHO concentrates come in so many different forms, what those names actually mean, how one consistency differs from another, and what consumers should understand when exploring concentrates for the first time. We’ll also discuss the terminology you’ll see on dispensary menus and the questions worth asking when deciding which type of concentrate may fit your preferences. Whether concentrates are completely new to you or you’ve always wondered why the same extraction category can produce so many different textures, this episode makes the science and terminology easier to understand.
