Anger Is Intelligence: Sheila Warren on the B******t Meter You Were Taught to Ignore

Sheila Warren has spent 25 years in rooms where the future gets decided — the World Economic Forum, Congress, the boards now shaping AI. So when she says anger is not a liability, I listen. In this episode, Sheila names something most women leaders have been taught to keep quiet: anger is a signal. It registers in the body before it registers in the intellect, and it is usually pointing at something specific — a crossed boundary, a room that has quietly decided whose point of view counts. We get into what she was and wasn’t taught about anger as an Indian American woman raised in a patriarchal household, the difference between anger as performance and anger as strategy, what it cost her to be the person who called it out at the highest levels, and how she talks to her three daughters about a world that keeps getting harder. This conversation does not ask you to be less angry. It asks you to stop misreading it. What We Get Into * 00:02 — Why this show exists: anger as the emotion women have been trained to misplace * 00:53 — Who Sheila is underneath the résumé, and the correction she makes to my introduction before we go any further * 02:29 — What a South Asian household teaches you about anger — which is nothing directly. It is absorbed, not taught * 03:19 — The line that reframes the whole episode: “It was never about feminine anger. It was about how to respond to masculine anger.” * 05:04 — Anger in high-power rooms: the quiet European version, the “there go the cowboys” American version, and what each one buys its owner * 08:50 — Navigating rooms where few look like you. Why she clocks it and refuses to let it make her self-conscious. * 10:56 — Her aunt, a feminist activist in India: “If that anger’s not productive, it just burns you up.” On anger as performance versus anger as engine * 12:51 — “Anger is a signal.” How the body flags injustice before the intellect catches up — and why that gap matters * 13:51 — When passion gets read as anger, and the backhanded compliment that proves it: “your throughput is so high ROI” * 15:55 — The V20 exchange: a lawyer asks why everyone can’t just use Harvey, and Sheila answers with evidence rather than heat * 20:41 — The role she keeps getting handed: is that real, or is that some nonsense you’re saying right now? * 21:43 — The b******t meter. My own feedback from a retreat, and why the meter is just anger with better branding * 23:43 — The limit nobody names: what it cost her to be the one who could not look away * 26:44 — Rest Is Resistance, and detoxing from operating at that intensity * 27:50 — Tip of the peloton versus carrying water: how your anger changes when you are the one driving the work * 30:14 — The structural insight: “the expression of anger is often tied to your literal power within a system” * 31:02 — Raising three daughters now, and the law professor who yelled at her class for having “a sixth-grade social studies view of history” * 36:12 — Why systems leave her strategic and individual violence leaves her overwhelmed * 40:01 — Her answer to “my anger is a liability”: “Absolutely not.” Plus the question she asks instead * 42:18 — Boxing three times a week, and the word she lands on: honor it Quotable “Anger is a signal. It’s the best early warning system — or late warning system, whatever. It’s a warning system.” “It was never about feminine anger. It was about how to respond to masculine anger.” “Not all b******t is mine to solve or mine to correct. You have to think of it as a relay, because otherwise you’ll burn yourself up.” “If that anger’s not productive, it just burns you up.” About Sheila Warren Sheila Warren is a globally recognized technology, policy, and legal expert whose mission has held steady for 25 years: making sure the next generation of global infrastructure is built on integrity, democracy, and ethics. She is Chair of the Advanced AI Society, stewarding Proof of Control, a standard for verifiable AI. She was previously CEO of Project Liberty Institute and founding CEO of the Crypto Council for Innovation, and before that founded the blockchain and digital assets team at the World Economic Forum, serving on its Executive Committee. Her career began at Cravath, Swaine & Moore, after a J.D. from Harvard Law and an A.B. in Economics, magna cum laude, from Harvard College. She has testified before Congress and state legislatures, advised governments worldwide, keynoted on five continents, and been named one of Washingtonian’s Most Powerful Women in Washington. One note from the episode: she advised Congress. She did not serve in it. Reading it is a skill. Most women I work with have spent years managing their anger — redirecting it into competence, into over-functioning, into a composure that everyone around them benefits from and they pay for. Harnessing Anger into Action: A Conversation with Kate O'Keefe

We are conditioned from a young age to edit ourselves. We learn to smooth down our sharp edges, sanitize our frustration, and rebrand our anger as “passion”—or worse, suppress it so deeply that we don’t even realize we are lying to ourselves. In this episode of Anger Reclaimed, I sit down with Kate O’Keefe, co-founder and CEO of HeatSeeker AI, to explore what happens when deep frustration with a broken status quo becomes the exact fuel required to build something revolutionary. Together, we break down the quiet shame around female anger, the relentless pursuit of truth in the age of AI, and how to stop editing your power to fit inside polite boxes. In this episode, we explore: * The Fire Behind Innovation: What it actually takes to step out of the safe corporate line and found a company. Kate speaks about the visceral “fire in the belly” required to take massive risks and why a commitment to truth is the core anchor of modern leadership. * What We Say vs. What We Actually Want: How surface-level consumer statements mask our rawest human desires—and why getting beneath the polite lies is the secret to true insight. (“People say they want longevity; they just want to look hot.”) * The Water of Self-Editing: How societal pressures compel women to tone down their assertiveness, turning healthy, boundary-setting anger into internalized shame. * The Unseen Repression: A vulnerable reflection on family legacies of anger, being raised to view rage as “unrefined,” and how easy it is to normalize emotional suppression until you can no longer feel your own boundaries. Key Quotes from Kate O’Keefe: “I live for the truth. I think getting to the heart of reality in this AI age is unbelievably important.” “We swim in this water of being forced to edit ourselves.” “The repression of anger in me is so deep that I often don’t even realize I’m lying to myself when I say I’m not angry.” About My Guest: Kate O’Keeffe Kate is the co-founder and CEO of Heatseeker AI, a customer understanding platform that helps companies discover what people really want by testing ideas in the live market. Before founding Heatseeker, Kate worked at BCG and Cisco, building and launching new ventures inside large organisations. Kate is learning how to lead without abandoning parts of herself, including emotions she once believed she needed to suppress. She sees one of the unexpected gifts of the founder journey, particularly when it feels impossible, as the opportunity to be changed by it. For Kate, entrepreneurship can resemble a hero’s journey: struggle exposes the patterns that success can conceal and, when met honestly, can be alchemised into greater courage, self-knowledge and compassion. Why Your Anger Is Your Superpower

Most women were raised to swallow their anger. Humanitarian leader and author Lina AbiRafeh shows us why that’s a mistake, and how listening to your anger can become the fuel for real, world-changing action. [Watch the full video episode above] What if your anger isn’t something to hide, but something to use? In this episode of Anger Reclaimed, I sit down with Lina AbiRafeh, a humanitarian leader who has spent two decades working on the frontlines with women and girls in war zones across more than twenty countries. Together, we dismantle the deep conditioning that teaches women to suppress their anger until it explodes like a pressure cooker. Lina breaks down the critical distinction between a destructive male temper and a healthy expression of emotion, exploring how anger, when truly listened to — becomes a precision compass pointing directly toward injustice, boundaries, and transformative action. Lina also shares the story behind her book, Feminist Firestarter: Activism for an Unraveling World, and her rallying cry for every woman feeling overwhelmed by the state of the world: Start where you stand. In Today’s Conversation, We Cover: * The “Pressure Cooker” Effect: Why suppressing anger until it explodes creates shame rather than catharsis. * Childhood Conditioning & Gender: How parental models teach us who is “allowed” to be angry and who is forced to translate rage into sadness. * Temper vs. Healthy Anger: The difference between abusive outbursts and stating your boundaries calmly and firmly. * Tonic Immobility & Double Standards: How women are penalized by the justice system whether they freeze or fight back. * Anger as Agency: Why allowing men anger and women sadness strips women of their inherent power and agency. * War Zones & Strategic Service: How Lina bottles her personal rage to negotiate strategically with governments and big donors on behalf of women in crises. * Apathy as the Real Enemy: Why the biggest threat to women’s rights isn’t just the opposition—it’s collective numbness. Key Moments & Timestamps * 00:26 — Lina’s relationship with anger: suppression, the pressure cooker, and “death by a thousand paper cups”. * 02:23 — Childhood messages about anger — why her dad was allowed to be angry and her mom wasn’t. * 05:07 — Temper vs. healthy anger: how to express emotion without slamming doors. * 08:37 — When explosive anger is the right response — protecting yourself in immediate danger. * 11:19 — Tonic immobility, the justice system, and the impossible double standard women face. * 12:27 — What anger actually means: a signal, a boundary, and a source of vital information. * 16:46 — Men are allowed anger, women are allowed sadness — and why that’s an uneven distribution of power. * 19:03 — Toxic masculinity in leadership and the “Andrew Tate-ification” of a young generation. * 22:47 — How Lina holds her anger in war zones and turns it into strategic service. * 27:10 — Alchemizing anger into action: listening, amplifying, and being a microphone for women’s voices. * 31:31 — The story and intention behind Feminist Firestarter. * 34:01 — “Start Where You Stand” — the Kathmandu street art that changed everything. About My Guest: Lina AbiRafeh, PhD Lina AbiRafeh is a humanitarian, author, and women’s rights advocate with over 20 years of experience fighting violence against women in conflict settings. She is the author of Feminist Firestarter: Activism for an Unraveling World, a book that demystifies feminism and shows how ordinary people — through small, cumulative choices — create extraordinary systemic change. * Get Her Book: https://www.amazon.com/dp/1915983614 * Watch Her TEDx Talk: Ready to Alchemize Your Rage into Leadership?
