Mental Health is Taboo With Guest Dr. Timotheus Dorh, MD

Mental Health is Taboo: Healthcare in St. Lucia and the Caribbean There is no one who understands the impact of climate change than those who live on island nations. Islanders experience the impact of tropical storms and hurricanes, often annually, and know what it's like to have to rebuild and recover. Healthcare on island nations can be very tricky. While there are very skilled practitioners in many of these countries, access to quality care can be hard to come by. In this episode you will learn about the creative ways this Windward island is using to provide access to affordable and necessary care. We explore what mental healthcare looks like in a country where it remains taboo and a bit about disaster recovery. You'll also hear us chat about the use of LLM technology in medical settings and what your rights are when it comes to your medical documentation. Besides being a competent practitioner of medicine, we think you'll also feel the warmth that comes across as we hang out with Timotheus. Mental Health Without Maps, With Guest Dr. Jason J. Platt

Mental Health Without Maps Imagine that. If you've ever tried to find a therapist before, you may have come across an issue with jurisdiction. The therapist you want to work with may not be licensed in the state you're living in or you had to find another therapist because you moved to another state. What if there was a world where you can safely, ethically, and responsibly work with your therapist regardless of where you two are living? Given the state of the world, the global demand has steadily increased for "mental health" care but the supply is insufficient. What can we do as mental health professionals to address the mental health economics? In this episode, we explore how we can creatively rethink how we do our work and what we can learn from the many generations of healers who've come before us who continue to exist in many communities around the world. Does Interpretation Really Matter? With Guest Covadonga Soto

Does Interpretation Really Matter? Mental Health and Interpreting Spoiler alert: Yes, it does matter. Too often, bilingual and multilingual people have been asked to provide interpretation (spoken) or translation (written) without having any training. When it comes to ordering food or finding a venue in a country foreign to you, this may work just fine. Even machine translation applications suffice. But in many cases, such as medical or mental health appointments, judicial hearings, or yes, even meetings with heads of states, people should think twice. Chapters 00:00 Introduction - What Am I Going To Do With My Life? 24:09 We Can't Interpret What We Don't Understand 47:34 Interpreters Don't Sing 58:38 Machine Translation and AI 79:05 Cova and Jenn Role Play Consecutive Interpreting 81:57 'I'm Happy to Yell.' Covadonga received her M.A. in Translation and Interpretation at the Middlebury Institute of International Studies at Monterey (a.k.a., MIIS) and is also a Member-at-Large of the Council with The American Association of Language Specialists (a.k.a., TAALS). Covadonga has provided professional interpretation in a variety of settings ranging from courts to military to medical appointments to working at the FIFA World Cup in Qatar. Listen in as Covadonga shares her personal and professional stories with us -- you will leave with a better understanding of this highly skilled profession, and your respect and empathy for interpreters will grow. She's also just a hilarious and warm person to listen to. Resources https://www.linkedin.com/in/covadonga-soto-b984305/ CTBH? is a Kin-nection production.
