How to Scale Past Your $150,000 Sales Ceiling with Emily Fengler

You have a dream of scaling your travel business, serving hundreds of clients, and selling multiple millions in travel. But right now, you’re stuck bumping up against a ceiling you never saw coming and that you’re not sure how to get past. In this debut episode of The Travel Advisor Show, Ali Raymer sits down with Emily Fengler, owner of Tailor My Travels, to talk about what that place feels like and what it actually looks like to scale a travel business without losing the personal, bespoke experience that makes clients choose you in the first place. They cover how to recognize a real ceiling versus a busy season, the guardrails Emily uses to protect her time and her clients (from “don’t call me, I’ll call you” to only running final payments on the 1st and 15th), how to step outside yourself and experience your own brand the way a client does, and why niching down and building repeatable systems, not doing less for clients, is actually the key to scaling. If you’ve ever wondered how to grow without becoming a version of your business you don’t recognize, this episode is your blueprint. A: A busy season passes. A real ceiling means you can't turn the spigot off no matter how hard you push, and quality slips. Emily's warning sign was exhaustion that outweighed the reward, not just a full calendar. Q: What are examples of guardrails a travel advisor can put in place? A: Clear communication windows ("don't call me, I'll call you"), final payments only on the 1st and 15th, batching follow-ups on Fridays, and scheduling sends so clients never know you're working at 10 PM. Q: Is niching down necessary to scale a travel business? A: Not in the traditional sense. Niching can mean defining your no's and layering in expertise over time instead of serving everyone. Q: What's one thing an advisor can do this week to start breaking through a ceiling? A: Write your process with pen and paper, start to finish, and look for the parts that are unclear or inconsistent. Fixing even one "sore thumb" improves the experience for you and your clients. Q: Why does Emily recommend charging a fee before doing any work? A: A fee filters out clients who aren't fully committed and raises your closing rate, since by the time someone pays, they've already said yes to you. She won't touch an itinerary until it's paid. Q: What does "graduating" a client mean, and why does it matter for scaling? A: Recognizing when a client is ready for a bigger, more elevated version of travel they love, like moving a river cruiser into small-ship ocean cruising, and offering it. It grows revenue from existing clients instead of only chasing new leads.

    Introducing The Travel Advisor Show
