Ep 4. The story of the ACEP 2001 Emergency Guidelines. From their creation, to their rejection by the SAEM BOD and finally to their passage by the ACEP BOD.

Looking back, it's surprising that a small group of dedicated emergency physicians were able to overcome immense political pressure to actually enable emergency physicians to perform ultrasound on a broad scale. The use of ultrasound by emergency physicians was attacked from both within the specialty and from large external forces. This is the story of how emergency ultrasound first started and how these early POCUS pioneers overcame immense obstacles that eventually led to ACEP approving the "Emergency Ultrasound Guidelines" in 2001. These guidelines became the sentinel document that paved the way for hospital's credentialing committees across the United States to approve emergency physician use of ultrasound for clinical care. This presentation was given at the 2026 ACEP Emergency Ultrasound Section's annual meeting. To watch the slides with the narration, go to www.EmergencyUltrasoundHistory.com.
