What Great Shops Do That Your Website Doesn’t

Walk into a great shop and you know right away. The music is good, every corner has its own feel, and the person at the counter tells you what they’ve been loving lately. So why does shopping online feel so flat? In this unplanned episode, Corey calls Brooks from outside a New York theater after a day at Pop Up Grocer and Big Night. He asks a question every Shopify brand should think about: how do you bring the fun of finding something new in a store to your website? In this episode: What great shops do differently: the music, displays that each have their own mood, products set beside each other in ways that make you want to look, and a staff member who tells you what they’d buy as a giftWhy browsing online feels flat: shelves let you see everything side by side, while most sites keep each product on its own pageThe shop clerk, online: customer service from real people, like Branch Basics’ phone line, and simple video that puts a person on every pageYour advantage over Amazon: no one ever goes to Amazon for the experience, and that’s where small brands can stand outStart with what makes your store feel special, then grow it: what Airbnb’s early photographers teach about starting with what works before worrying about doing it at scaleYour website is your store: on Shopify you’re not stuck with a retailer’s shelf rules, so try new things, change the experience, and make it feel like your own retail shop.Repeat Purchase is a podcast by on/Sight about growing eCommerce brands, with practical episodes for Shopify merchants.

Why focusing on Conversion Rate is bad for your business

Your conversion rate drops and the whole team panics. But what if you actually made more money? In this episode, Brooks and Corey Reid, onSight’s Chief Growth Officer, explain why you shouldn’t judge your store by conversion rate, and what to track instead. In this episode: A quick quiz: your conversion rate falls from 3% to 2.5%, but your average order value goes from $100 to $300. You made more money, not less.Where the obsession came from: the 2010s, when DTC brands raised huge amounts of cheap money and chased customer count at any costWhy that thinking is outdated: with interest rates up, brands are judged on profit, not just how many customers they winRevenue per session: Corey’s one number to track, which is conversion rate × average order value. It shows both how likely visitors are to buy and how much they spend.Watch out for heavy discounts: a big discount can raise conversion rate while lowering what you earn from each visitorHow often to check: look for weekly or monthly trends, not daily ups and downs. Months like October and early November can look low because shoppers are waiting for Black Friday.Try this before Black Friday: Download your conversion rate and average order value by month for the past year, and calculate your revenue per session. Then divide your November and December revenue goals by that number. The result tells you how many sessions you need, so you can plan your emails and ad traffic. Black Friday Sales Strategy Part 2

Black Friday Sales Strategy Part 2 Run your sale too long, and shoppers hesitate. Make it too complicated, and they leave. In Part 2, Brooks and Corey Reid, on/Sight’s Chief Growth Officer, explain how to plan a Black Friday and Cyber Monday sale that’s short, simple, and urgent. In this episode: When to start: why the strongest window runs from the Monday of Thanksgiving week through Cyber Monday, and why extending a sale past that can look desperateChange the offer each day: feature a different product or collection every day so you have something new to email about and shoppers keep coming backKeep the offer simple: if it takes two paragraphs to explain, shoppers won’t understand it, and complicated tiered discounts are hard to set upNo midnight launches: schedule your sale ahead of time instead of having your team switch it on at midnight on ThanksgivingDon’t advertise a discount almost nothing qualifies for: an “up to 70% off” email with one item at 70% off costs you shoppers’ trustSet a revenue goal and work backward: use your conversion rate and average order value to see what you need to hit itChoosing a discount: start with your gross margin, don’t count on holiday buyers coming back next year, and test percent-off against dollars-off in your emails nowIf you missed Part 1, start there. It covers the product page, simplicity tests and compare-at pricing. Questions or a topic you’d like us to cover? Email hello@on-sight.co.
