Colin Smith - Save the Great Salt Lake, Get Outside

Welcome to the podcast for the Forward Party of Utah.  It's 2026, election season is right around the corner, ballots going out in just a few weeks. And it's fair to say that recently we've felt some tension going on in politics. Both nationally, and locally in Utah.  According to a recent Deseret News-Hinckley Institute of Politics poll, a majority of Utah voters, 6 in 10, do not feel like the Republican and Democratic parties represent their views. If you've ever thought "I wish the legacy parties didn't feel so extreme" or "I wish I didn't have to vote between the lesser of two evils" Or how about this - as the very least, can we be more civil with one another and focus and common ground legislation that benefits everyone? You've come to the right place.  In this episode, we sit down for a casual interview with Colin Smith, who is running for the Utah State Senate seat in District 13 as a candidate with the Forward Party of Utah. District 13 sits right in the middle of the valley, centered around South Salt Lake, also including the west side of Millcreek and Murray, and a bit of West Valley City.  According to his campaign website, Colin Smith is a leader with a career rooted in the outdoor behavioral healthcare field, where he has worked extensively in roles focused on leadership, program development, and client-centered care. His campaign brings a perspective shaped by years of guiding individuals and teams through complex challenges, emphasizing resilience, accountability, and real-world problem solving.  That all sounds nice on paper, but you get the real vibe of Colin when you sit down and talk with him in person. We touch on why what's going on with the Great Salt Lake, how we can and should feel optimistic about saving it, we explore Colin's origin story, his passion for feeding families, the challenge and fun of doing hard things, And the importance of being outside with fresh air. Appropriate enough, as we begin our chat sitting outside by Pete's Rock at the base of Mount Olympus, on a wonderful September morning.  To learn more, visit https://www.utahforwardparty.org/ https://www.forwardwithcolin.org/ Music credits "Perspectives" Kevin MacLeod (incompetech.com) Licensed under Creative Commons: By Attribution 4.0 http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/
