The HyTech Podcast, spelt H-Y, is where Rob Hygate explores the technology shaping the real world. Rob is the founder and CTO of eWATER Services and has spent his working life building and applying technology across software, embedded systems, IoT, mobile payments, communications, infrastructure and water technology. Each episode cuts through the hype to look at what’s actually changing, from AI and software development to connected devices, automation, engineering and the technologies transforming how organisations operate. HyTech is about practical technology, real-world implementation and the ideas worth paying attention to. Https://spelthy.com

Scarcity Is a Choice: AI, Pointless Jobs and the Case for Abundance

This episode argues that AI will not simply create a new jobs crisis, but will expose a long-standing economy built on scarcity, pointless work and badly measured unemployment. Drawing on examples from Microsoft and Barclays, the host explores how companies may be using AI as a rationale for restructuring while discussing whether many roles are genuinely useful or just keep systems running. He also challenges official labor statistics, pointing to the much larger global jobs gap and the millions in informal or unpaid work that are often left out of headline figures. The discussion broadens into inequality, migration, hunger and the idea of universal basic income or “universal high income” as a response to automation. Using examples from Kenya’s basic income trials, food waste, and the scale of AI infrastructure spending, the episode makes the case that abundance is technically possible but politically constrained. It ends with a warning that if access to food and income stays tied to shrinking jobs, social unrest could follow—and with a call to build systems that make scarcity look unnecessary.

Solving the World's Water Crisis with AI Data Centres

This episode explores how AI’s biggest constraint may no longer be chips or model quality, but electricity. Using Microsoft’s cancelled UK data centre deal and the wider scramble for grid access as a starting point, the discussion compares different ways to power large-scale computing: waiting for the grid, using on-site gas generation, or building around solar and batteries. From there, the episode turns to a more unconventional idea: placing data centres on the coast in sunny regions, where seawater can handle cooling and spare solar power can be used to make fresh water. Mombasa becomes the central case study, with its strong solar potential, subsea cable landing points, and urgent water shortage. The episode argues that a self-powered coastal data centre could both support AI infrastructure and help supply clean water, while also acknowledging environmental, financial, and political challenges.

    Hytech Sailing

This episode looks at how rapid advances in satellite communications, positioning, onboard cameras and autonomy are reshaping sailing, especially for boats far from help. Drawing on years of offshore voyaging and the failures that can happen at sea, the episode compares old-school redundancy with new systems that promise stronger navigation signals, cheap satellite links for tiny devices, AI-powered watchkeeping and early self-docking tools. It also explores a bigger theme: the tension between smart technology and reliability. From broken watermakers and autopilots to the need for manual bypasses and spare parts, the episode argues that the best long-distance systems still need a "dumb mode" when the clever bits fail. That leads into a wider discussion of reverse osmosis, solar desalination and how the same simple, serviceable approach could help remote communities as well as yachts.

    Made in Kenya

This episode looks at what “made in Kenya” really means for electronics and hardware. Using examples from Nairobi and Seoul, it explains the difference between kit assembly, circuit board assembly, and chip manufacturing — and why the scarcest parts of a device often determine its price, no matter where it is assembled. The discussion turns to Kenya’s growing manufacturing ambitions, including electric vehicles, smartphones, and local board assembly, then connects them to global shortages in memory and computing power driven by AI demand. The episode argues that the most valuable opportunities for African hardware may lie in boards, firmware, testing, repair, and financing rather than in trying to compete on the most concentrated parts of the supply chain.

    App Builders

This episode examines the latest wave of AI app-building tools from Replit, OpenAI, Anthropic, and Google, and argues that the real issue is no longer how fast people can make apps, but what those apps are allowed to access. It compares different permission models: local sandboxes on a user’s PC, hosted tools with connected data and production URLs, artifacts that inherit the viewer’s access, and coworker agents that act under their own identity with audit trails. The discussion then shifts from product news to the operational reality inside organisations: who signs off access, how to track the growing number of employee-built tools, and why APIs and connectors matter more than the apps themselves. Using examples from HyTech’s own work in community water operations, the episode makes the case that the “front door” to systems — permissions, identity, and auditability — is now the thing worth managing carefully.

    AI in eWater

In this inaugural HyTech episode, Rob Hygate reflects on a week of major AI announcements from Anthropic, OpenAI, and Google, focusing less on benchmark gains and more on what cheaper, faster, more autonomous models mean for real businesses. He argues that the true shift is economic: as intelligence becomes less expensive, companies can analyze more data, automate more workflows, and tackle problems that were never worth the human time before. Using eWATER Services as a case study, he explores how AI could help monitor water taps across multiple countries, reduce operational latency, assist developers, and support technicians with faster diagnosis. The episode also draws a clear line between useful autonomy and the need for trust, permissions, logging, and human oversight when systems touch critical infrastructure and payments.
