    Classic Calypso/ Soca Party

As the world celebrates the life and legacy of the Mighty Sparrow, I’ve put together a collection of music featuring Sparrow and some of the other legends of the Calypso and Soca universe.  This is music for DANCING as much as THINKING—infectious rhythms, unforgettable melodies, sharp wit, social commentary, history, and plenty of substance. In other words, music that can move your feet AND your brain! Featuring music from Lord Shorty, Lord Kitchener, The Mighty Sparrow, Super Blue, David Rudder, Gypsy, Shadow, Black Stalin, The Mighty Duke, Crazy, Our Boys’ Steel Orchestra, Pamberi Steel Orchestra, and more. Turn it up, listen closely, and enjoy the music! Calypso/ Soca is supposed to make you dance… but if you’re paying attention, it might teach you something too. ⁃ Papa Robbie

    The BAM BAM STORY

BAM BAM STORY  In Jamaican patois, "bam bam" means a ruckus, commotion, or sudden trouble. When reggae pioneer Toots Hibbert of Toots and the Maytals used the phrase in their winning 1966 song "Bam Bam", it served as a warning that despite being easygoing, pushing him would start a ruckus. It later came to mean a complimentary phrase for a part of a woman's anatomy. ;-)   Toots and the Maytals released "Bam Bam" and won the very first Jamaican Festival Song Competition in 1966.  Yellowman & Fathead did their rendition of the song in 1982 on the "Bad Boy Skanking" album (Sister Nancy was present during the recording and decided to do her own rendition shortly thereafter in the same year).  Sister Nancy's version appears on her "One Two" album and would later become iconic (overshadowing other versions).   Pliers would do his rendition in 1992 over Sly & Robbie's aptly named "Bam Bam" riddim.  In 2004, Toots came back to reclaim his own song by releasing a version on his Grammy award winning "True Love" album featuring Shaggy & Rahzel, bringing it full circle.  The song has been covered and sampled numerous times and all versions are great IMO.  Check out a mini excursion through the history of  "BAM BAM". -Papa Robbie
