To optimize our text-to-speech (TTS) preprocessing pipeline, we decoupled our custom pronunciation mapping from the core script execution. Previously, phonetic overrides were hardcoded directly into the Python workflow, creating unnecessary noise and maintenance friction within the notebook. To ensure consistent broadcast accuracy across the NHL's diverse, global player pool—where names originate from varied Eastern European, Scandinavian, and North American language traditions—every player name was standardized into the International Phonetic Alphabet (IPA). We then migrated this dictionary to an external JSON file hosted on Google Drive, allowing for modular updates without touching the codebase. Programmatically, the pipeline now dynamically checks for the file at runtime, loads the mapping into memory, and compiles an optimized regular expression matcher to handle phonetic substitutions seamlessly before speech synthesis.
