Deli

This isn't a press interview. It's a lime. Down by Deli brings people from across the Caribbean diaspora and beyond to the table to share their stories, in their own words. Carnival memories, family roots, big moves, small moments, and everything in between. Some guests you'll recognize, some you'll be meeting for the first time, and every one of them gets the time they deserve. No rush. Just real conversation. New episodes every Tuesday.

Pan is Not Just a Hobby | Why We Must Invest in Our Youth

Dane Gulston has spent more than four decades on the frontline of Trinidad All Stars, taking steelpan from the pan yard to stages around the world, including NPR's Tiny Desk with Kes the Band. In this conversation with Deli, he gets honest about the struggles artistes face working abroad, how he ended up in Germany for the World Cup, and how pan is received overseas compared with at home. He goes back to growing up in the pan yard, his first tour with All Stars, and the aunt he grew up with coming around to the path he chose. Then he compares Panorama in New York City and Trinidad and makes the case that steel bands can do more, that supporting pan yards can help reduce crime, and that if Trinidad and Tobago truly appreciates pan, it has to pay for pan.  0:00 Intro  01:17 Dane talks about the struggles artistes face to work abroad 11:45 Reminisces on the opportunity to be in Germany for the World Cup 27:45 Early upbringing in the pan yard 42:47 How New York differs from Trinidad for Panorama 54:32 New ventures 58:30 Steel bands in New York can do more! 1:03:17 Support for pan yards can help reduce crime.   1:09:37 Appreciating  pan means paying for pan.   Click here to watch a video of this episode.
