    The Jar Marked Sable Losing

On the last windy evening of the season, Pip Underweather climbs Whistling Ridge with two empty jars: one for the long note the ridge sings once a year, and one for the sound of Sable losing at cards, which nobody has heard in three years. Pip Underweather collects sounds in jars and has missed the ridge’s last note of autumn three years running. Pip has also never beaten Sable, the windreader, on her low board weighted with stones. On the final night before Sable packs the board away for winter, Pip means to get both, but there is only one Pip, there are two jars, and the wind keeps its own time. He has seen the start of every sunset there ever was and never the end, and more than anything he wants to watch one the whole way through. So he asks old Mrs. Tuck the tortoise to teach him to be slow, but walking, eating and sitting still all go far too fast when Dash does them. Snow by Parcel Post

In Rosie’s valley the first snow comes by post in brown paper parcels, and the very last one has lost its label to the drips except for one big smudgy R. Rosie helps her mom, the postwoman, deliver the winter’s first snow. She carries every drippy parcel up every path as carefully as a birthday cake, and the farms, the windmill and the duck pond turn white one by one. At the bottom of the sack is one last parcel with only an R left on its label, and Rosie wants to find out who it belongs to before bedtime. While she is away at the Weather Fair, Mo minds Little Cloud, who rains when he is sad, snows when he is happy and rumbles like a tummy when he is hungry. Hattie and the Hundred and Twelve Steps

Hattie is a very old tortoise who lives at the bottom of a lighthouse, and she has spent a whole winter working out how to get up a hundred and twelve steps to watch the star come down. Every evening a small, kind star flies down into the lighthouse lamp and turns the sea gold, and Hattie the tortoise has never once seen it arrive. Each spring she tries to climb the stairs, but the rule on Hattie’s Day is that nobody carries her, and Grandpa’s chalk marks show she has never got past step forty-one. This year she has noticed three things about the laundry basket, Nell’s lunch tray and Grandpa’s oilcan, and she has a plan. The Comet’s Cart Goes Uphill

Corvin the Tinker fixes the Wandering Comet’s cart so it will never roll into the pond again, and it rolls uphill instead, off across the meadow with the Comet walking briskly behind and insisting the Comet does not hurry. At the Meadow Pond, the Wandering Comet’s leaning handcart has tipped the card packs into the water twice in ten years. The Comet calls that an acceptable rate. Corvin the Tinker sticks an old card from a runaway kettle onto the axle to stop it happening again, and the cart sets off up the meadow by itself, taking the well keeper’s washing line with it. Now the Comet, who never hurries, and Corvin, who hates doing a job twice, have to get the cart back down to the pond in time for the evening’s trading. Poppy is a small fox who can’t sleep without her old blue blanket and its chewed corner, the Ear. When the West Wind mixes up the wood’s washing, she ends up with a huge square blanket that smells of honey and old books. It belongs to Old Barnaby, the lonely bear at the top of the path. That night Poppy and her patient dad push the bear’s blanket up the hill in a wheelbarrow to swap it back, and they find that Barnaby has been sleeping with the Ear held carefully under his chin.
