Fiyabomb: Turning Creative Ambition Into a Business

In this episode of The Thought Economy, Olivia Nguyen, also known as Fiyabomb, shares the story behind her unconventional path from aspiring artist in Connecticut to internationally recognized painter and creative entrepreneur. A lifelong artist who discovered her passion for painting at age 6 while watching Bob Ross, Nguyen stayed committed to her creative ambitions despite being warned that pursuing art would leave her financially unstable. After graduating from Central Connecticut State University with a fine arts degree and a minor in marketing, Nguyen found herself working at a nail salon and questioning the conventional promise that a college degree would lead to a career. She began using Instagram to promote celebrity illustrations, eventually creating a massive portrait of the rapper Big Sean that caught the artist’s attention and changed the trajectory of her career. That experience gave Nguyen the confidence to leave her job and pursue art full time. From collaborations with Rick Ross, Spike Lee, 2 Chainz, T.I., Chanel, Gucci, Apple and others to live painting at FIFA events, Nguyen has built a career by combining artistic talent with an entrepreneurial mindset. She discusses the importance of taking unconventional risks, turning ideas into action, building multiple revenue streams, and learning the business side of being a creative. Nguyen also reflects on returning to Connecticut, the importance of investing in the arts, and the role artists can play in shaping the identity and vibrancy of their communities. Looking ahead to a new exhibition, she shares what it means to finally feel seen after years of creating, experimenting and pushing forward without knowing who was watching.
