    Do Not Love the World

John writes to children, fathers, and young men in the faith, who know the Father and have overcome the evil one. Do not love the world or the things in the world, the desires of the flesh and eyes and the pride of life, for the world is passing away. It is the last hour, and antichrists have gone out from the church, showing they never belonged to it. Believers have an anointing from the Holy One and abide in Christ. Tribulation awaits his followers, but they are not orphans; his Spirit abides with them until he comes.

    Walking in the Light

John answers false claims with the truth. If we walk in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus cleanses us from all sin; if we say we have no sin, we deceive ourselves. If anyone does sin, we have an advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous, the propitiation for our sins. Those who know him keep his commandments and walk as he walked, for the life of Christ in his people shows in love and obedience. The commandment of love is old and yet new in him.

    God Is Light

John's message is that God is light, and in him is no darkness at all. Scripture uses light for God's life and salvation: in your light do we see light. John exposes false claims: to say we have fellowship with God while walking in darkness, or to say we have no sin, is self-deception. If believers walk in the light, they have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus cleanses them from all sin. Jesus Christ is the propitiation for the sins of the whole world and the light of the world.

    The Word of Life

Turning from John's gospel to his first letter, 1 John opens without the usual greeting. The apostle proclaims the word of life, which was from the beginning and which the apostles heard, saw with their eyes, and touched with their hands. The eternal life that was with the Father was made visible in Jesus Christ. The message is not new, but it is true, and it is proclaimed so that hearers may share fellowship with the apostles, with the Father, and with his Son, and so that their joy may be complete.
