Cornelius Van Til: Against the World for the Church

A Morning Instruction class concluding the study of Cornelius Van Til's life, beginning with Paul's farewell to the Ephesian elders in Acts 20. The lesson draws on John Muether's biography, comparing Van Til's long teaching career with that of Charles Hodge at Princeton: both were churchmen who witnessed division in American Presbyterianism and served the church. It closes with a pastor's account of coming to presuppositional apologetics and with prayer for faithful ministers, elders, and deacons to guard the flock Christ bought with his blood.

Cornelius Van Til: Toward a Christ-Centered Apologetic

A Morning Instruction class on Cornelius Van Til's case for a Christ-centered apologetic, read with Romans 1 and Paul at Athens. All people know God from creation yet suppress the truth and worship the creature. The traditional method of apologetics, which grants the unbeliever's reason as neutral judge, tells him nothing is wrong with his thinking, contrary to Scripture's teaching that the natural mind is darkened. Following Calvin, Van Til rejected neutral natural theology and called for reasoning that begins with God's revelation in Christ.

Cornelius Van Til: A Pastor's Reminiscences

A Morning Instruction class of personal reminiscences about Cornelius Van Til from a pastor who served his congregation in Glenside, Pennsylvania, beginning in 1981, when Van Til was elderly. Van Til is remembered as a Christian gentleman, classically trained and devoted to his students and his church, and as a pastor himself to those around him. The talk recalls stories from his teaching and later years and reflects on how his apologetics has been received, sometimes as a test of orthodoxy and sometimes rejected without real engagement.

Cornelius Van Til: Van Til and Machen

A Morning Instruction class on Cornelius Van Til's apologetics and his relationship to J. Gresham Machen and old Princeton. The lesson asks whether Van Til's presuppositional method contradicts Machen's evidential emphasis or complements it. It traces Van Til's first published article, a critique of A. N. Whitehead in the Princeton Theological Review, and his position on the theistic proofs: natural revelation leaves people without excuse, but there is no neutral natural theology, and facts cannot be interpreted apart from God's word.

    Cornelius Van Til: His Life

A Morning Instruction class on the life of Cornelius Van Til, opening with Jude's call to contend for the faith. The lesson traces the Dutch Reformed background into which Van Til was born in 1895, including the secession churches of the 1830s and the five points of Calvinism set against Arminianism, then his emigration, his studies at Calvin and Princeton, and his joining J. Gresham Machen at the founding of Westminster Theological Seminary and the Orthodox Presbyterian Church, where he served until his death in 1987.
