Do Not Listen to That Prophet

Deuteronomy 13 warns Israel: if a prophet or dreamer arises and gives a sign that comes true, yet says, "Let us go after other gods," they must not listen. The Lord is testing whether they love him with all their heart, and the same holds when the tempter is a brother, a son, a wife, or a friend. To abandon the Lord was to abandon the Savior who had already rescued them from Egypt. In the new covenant the test of any teacher, signs or no signs, is how the teaching treats the gospel of Jesus Christ. As John says, "Little children, keep yourselves from idols."

The Place the Lord Chooses for His Name

Deuteronomy 12 commands Israel to destroy the Canaanite places of worship and to seek the Lord only at the place he would choose to make his name dwell, bringing their offerings there and rejoicing before him. The chapter is framed by matching warnings at its beginning and end. The place mattered because of the Lord's name and presence there, not its location, and so it prepared for the temple to give way to Jesus Christ. Every knee will bow at his name, the name above every name.

    The Tablets Restored

After Israel's sin with the golden calf, the Lord had Moses cut new tablets and wrote the Ten Commandments on them again, and Moses placed them in the ark. Aaron, though he had sinned greatly, was forgiven and his son succeeded him as priest, and the Levites were set apart to carry the ark and to bless in the Lord's name. The restored tablets in the ark were a reminder that God remained faithful to his covenant. The Lord's Supper is a similar sign of his faithfulness, and the humble and contrite are invited to his table.

Man Does Not Live by Bread Alone

At his baptism the Father declared Jesus his beloved Son, echoing Psalm 2 and Isaiah 42, and then the Spirit led him into the wilderness. Tempted to turn stones into bread, Jesus answered from Deuteronomy 8:3: man does not live by bread alone, but by every word that comes from the mouth of God. Where Israel grumbled over manna, Jesus stayed faithful as the obedient Son, on a path that led through Gethsemane to the cross. Apart from him we can do nothing; in him believers live by God's word.

    The Covenant Renewed

After the golden calf, the Lord renewed his covenant: Moses cut new tablets, the Lord wrote the Ten Commandments again, and the tablets were kept in the ark. Israel resumed its journey and the Levites were set apart for service. A chastened people learned they lived only because of God's mercy, not their deserving, and they were called to fear, love, and serve him with circumcised hearts. Stone tablets could not change hearts of stone; that waited for the new covenant in Christ's blood.

    A Stubborn People

Moses reminds Israel how they provoked the Lord at Horeb, making a golden calf while he received the tablets of the covenant. He broke the tablets before their eyes, a public sign that they had broken the covenant, and destroyed the idol. Then he fell before the Lord for forty days and nights, interceding on the basis of God's promises to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob and his concern for his own name among the nations. A stubborn people lived only because a mediator stood in the gap, as Christ now intercedes for his people.

    Not Because of Your Righteousness

Moses warns Israel not to say that the Lord gave them the land because of their righteousness. The nations would be driven out for their wickedness, and Israel would receive the land because the Lord kept his oath to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. Far from earning it, Israel had been a stubborn people, rebellious from the day the Lord knew them. No one is saved by his own righteousness; salvation comes only through the righteousness of God in Christ, so that whoever boasts must boast in the Lord.

    The Better Bread

The manna in the wilderness was no ordinary food. God sent it from heaven to humble Israel and teach them that man lives by every word that comes from his mouth. Obedience was the response of a people already redeemed, not a way to earn the land. Jesus is the true bread from heaven. Israel grumbled at the manna, and many stumbled when Jesus said, "I am the bread that came down from heaven," but everyone who believes in him has eternal life.
