    Grow in Grace and Knowledge

Peter closes his letter with three truths and three commands. Believers look for new heavens and a new earth, the Lord's patience means salvation, and they know these things beforehand. So they are to be diligent to be found spotless and at peace, to take care not to be carried away by the error of the lawless, and to grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. Peter, who once fell and was restored, ends with praise to Christ, for doxology belongs to mature Christian life.

The Day of the Lord Will Come Like a Thief

The day of the Lord will come like a thief, the heavens will pass away, and the earth and its works will be exposed. Since all these things will be dissolved, believers live in holiness and godliness, waiting for and hastening the day of God. They hasten it as the gospel goes out and the full number of God's people is brought in. According to his promise, they look for new heavens and a new earth in which righteousness dwells, where all tears are wiped away and they will dwell with Christ.

Do Not Forget This One Fact

Peter tells his readers not to overlook one fact: with the Lord one day is as a thousand years, and a thousand years as one day. The Lord is not slow to fulfill his promise as some count slowness, but patient, not wishing that any should perish but that all should reach repentance. His people establish their hearts by remembering his character. The day of the Lord will still come like a thief, with no way to predict it, so believers live ready for his return.

Where Is the Promise of His Coming?

Peter warns that in the last days scoffers will come, following their own desires and asking, "Where is the promise of his coming?" They claim that everything continues as it always has, but they forget that God's word made the heavens and the earth, that the world was once destroyed by the flood, and that the same word reserves the present heavens and earth for fire on the day of judgment. Believers are not to fix their hearts on this world, and they hold to the words of the prophets and of Christ through his apostles.

    Stirring Up Your Sincere Mind

Peter writes his second letter to stir up his readers' sincere minds by way of reminder. Even a well-taught congregation needs to remember the words spoken beforehand by the holy prophets and the commandment of the Lord and Savior through the apostles. Isaiah 61 foretold the rebuilding of ruins and foreigners serving as the Lord's priests, fulfilled as the gospel goes to the nations. The prophets and apostles speak with one voice of Christ, and believers are kept by remembering their word.

    False Teachers among You

Peter was an eyewitness of Christ's majesty on the holy mountain, and the prophetic word is made more sure. But as false prophets arose in Israel, false teachers will arise in the church, secretly bringing in destructive heresies and even denying the Master who bought them. Many will follow their sensuality, and the way of truth will be maligned. Their judgment is not idle. True disciples see themselves as bondservants of Christ, who owns them, and the church must guard the gospel, including the doctrine of justification.

The Lord Knows How to Rescue the Godly

God did not spare the angels who sinned or the ancient world in the flood, and he reduced Sodom and Gomorrah to ashes, yet he preserved Noah and rescued righteous Lot, whose soul was tormented by the lawless deeds around him. So the Lord knows how to rescue the godly from trials and to keep the unrighteous under punishment until the day of judgment. The wicked despise Christ's authority. Believers who feel the pull of the sin around them can trust the Lord to keep and deliver them.

    Divine Blessings

Peter greets believers who have received a faith as precious as the apostles' and prays that grace and peace be multiplied to them in the knowledge of God and of Jesus. God's divine power has granted them everything they need for life and godliness through knowing him who called them by his own glory and excellence. By his precious promises they share in the divine nature and escape the corruption of the world. These gifts free believers to set their affections on Christ, who is seated on high.
