Christ Jesus Came to Save Sinners

Paul thanks Christ Jesus, who judged him faithful and appointed him to his service, though he was once a blasphemer, persecutor, and insolent opponent. "Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners, of whom I am the foremost." Every baptized believer is enlisted in God's army, and Paul charges Timothy to wage the good warfare, holding faith and a good conscience. Some have rejected conscience and made shipwreck of their faith, like Hymenaeus and Alexander, whom Paul handed over to Satan so that they might learn not to blaspheme. The church disciplines out of love, to restore. God's word forms a good conscience, and his grace keeps his people from shipwreck.

    Guard the Deposit

Paul's final charge to Timothy is to guard the deposit entrusted to him and to avoid irreverent babble and the contradictions of what is falsely called knowledge. The Levites guarded the tabernacle, and Adam was placed in the garden to keep it but let the unclean in. The deposit is the gospel, the Scriptures, and the flock, and the pastor is an under-shepherd. Christ, the true King and Shepherd, guards his church through faithful ministry. Paul's letter ends as it began: "Grace be with you."

    Rich in Good Works

Paul tells Timothy to charge the rich in this present age not to be haughty or to set their hopes on the uncertainty of riches, but on God, who richly provides everything to enjoy. They are to do good, be rich in good works, and be generous and ready to share, storing up a good foundation for the future so that they may take hold of true life. Wealth can vanish overnight. God gives some believers wealth so they can bless the church and missions, and those who have Christ are rich in the age to come.

The King of Kings and Lord of Lords

Paul's doxology in 1 Timothy 6 praises God as the blessed and only Sovereign, the King of kings and Lord of lords, who alone has immortality and dwells in unapproachable light, whom no one has seen or can see. No one can look on God's full glory and live, but the only Son has made him known: whoever has seen Jesus has seen the Father. Earthly rulers fade like passing fashions, while Christ's government and peace increase without end. His people respond with praise: "Our God reigns."

    The Appearing of Our Lord

Paul charges Timothy to keep the commandment until the appearing of our Lord Jesus Christ, which God will bring about at the proper time. Christ has two appearings: his first coming in humiliation, ending in his exaltation, and his second coming in glory. Believers live between the two and look for him as the bride in the Song of Solomon longs for her beloved. On that day the last will be first and believers will share in judging the world. Until then, they keep their confession unstained.

    The Good Confession

Paul charges Timothy to keep the good confession, as Christ Jesus made the good confession before Pontius Pilate: "My kingdom is not of this world. For this purpose I was born, to bear witness to the truth." Christ spoke the Father's words with perfect purity, though he came in the likeness of sinful flesh. Believers make their own confession of faith, not as elite Christians but as sinners who need a Savior. The doctrine confessed and the Christ confessed stand or fall together.

Pastors Use Authority to Produce Love

Paul left Timothy in Ephesus to charge certain men not to teach different doctrine, and the goal of that charge is love from a pure heart, a good conscience, and a sincere faith. Pastors must use their authority to oppose teaching that harms the flock, yet doctrinal purity is not an end in itself; its aim is love. The law is good if used lawfully, avoiding both lawlessness and moralism. Sound doctrine cannot save anyone by itself. Only Christ saves, and he is offered to every hearer.

    Godliness with Contentment

False teachers suppose that godliness is a means of gain, but Paul teaches that godliness with contentment is great gain. We brought nothing into the world and can take nothing out; with food and clothing we will be content. Those who desire to be rich fall into temptation and ruin, and the love of money is a root of all kinds of evil, which has led some away from the faith. Prosperity preaching still repeats the error. The great mystery of godliness is Christ himself, and contentment is found in knowing him.
