The Gospel of God and Obedience of Faith: Apostolic Greetings and Brotherly Affection

Romans opens with Paul, set apart for the gospel of God concerning his Son, descended from David according to the flesh and declared the Son of God in power by his resurrection. Through Christ, Paul received grace and apostleship to bring about the obedience of faith among all the nations, and the letter closes with warm greetings to brothers and sisters in Rome. Fallen in the first Adam, believers are saved through the second Adam and live the obedience of faith together.

The God of Hope and of Peace

Paul prays that the God of hope will fill the Romans with all joy and peace in believing, so that they abound in hope by the power of the Holy Spirit. He describes his ministry as a priestly service of the gospel to the Gentiles and tells of his plans to visit Rome on the way to Spain, plans God fulfilled by bringing him there as a prisoner. The God of the gospel is the God of hope and the God of peace, and his people pray and labor together for the spread of the good news.

One Lord and Our True Christian Liberty

Advent looks back to Christ's first coming, which Zechariah praised in the Benedictus, and forward to his second coming, which Scripture promises again and again. Christ came to set his people free, and Romans 14 applies that liberty to the church: the strong and the weak do not despise or judge one another, because each stands or falls before one Lord. Believers live in the light of his appearing, building one another up and putting others first.

    A Living and Holy Sacrifice

By the mercies of God, believers present their bodies as a living and holy sacrifice, which is their spiritual service of worship. They are no longer conformed to this world but transformed by the renewing of their minds, and they use their different gifts as members of one body. Love is genuine: they hate what is evil, hold fast to what is good, bless those who persecute them, and overcome evil with good.

    The Believers’ Hope

The sufferings of this present time are not worth comparing with the glory to be revealed. The whole creation groans as it waits for the revealing of the sons of God, and believers who have the firstfruits of the Spirit groan as they wait for the redemption of their bodies. The Spirit helps them in their weakness and intercedes for them, and God works all things together for the good of those he called, justified, and will glorify.

    The Spirit Against the Flesh

From Genesis 3:15 onward Scripture shows enmity between the serpent and the woman's seed, and in Romans 7 Paul describes the same warfare inside the believer. He delights in God's law in his inner being, yet sin dwelling in his members wars against it, and he cries out, "Wretched man that I am! Who will deliver me from this body of death?" Thanks be to God through Jesus Christ, believers fight the good fight with the sword of the Spirit and look for his appearing.

In Newness of the Holy Spirit

A wife is bound to her husband while he lives and is free to marry another after his death. In the same way believers have died to the law through the body of Christ so that they belong to another, to him who was raised from the dead, and bear fruit for God. Released from the law that aroused sinful passions, they serve in the new way of the Spirit, who writes God's law on their hearts.

We Have Now Received the Reconciliation

Justified by faith, believers have peace with God through the Lord Jesus Christ and stand in grace. They rejoice in hope of the glory of God, they rejoice even in tribulation because it produces endurance, character, and hope, and above all they rejoice in God himself. God showed his love in that while they were still sinners Christ died for them, and if they were reconciled by his death, much more will they be saved by his life.

    The Righteousness of Faith

Paul points to Abraham to show that justification is by faith apart from the works of the law: "Abraham believed God, and it was counted to him as righteousness." God credited that righteousness before Abraham received circumcision, so he is the father of all who believe. David likewise blesses the one whose sins the Lord covers and does not count. Abraham's faith rested on God's promise against all hope, and God counts the same righteousness to all who believe in him who raised Jesus from the dead.

    Circumcision of the Heart

Paul confronts those who rely on the law and boast in God while teaching others what they do not practice themselves, so that God's name is blasphemed among the Gentiles. Circumcision and the privileges of the covenant only increase the guilt of those who break the law. True circumcision is of the heart, by the Spirit, so every sinner needs the righteousness of Christ, which the gospel offers to the Jew first and also to the Greek.

The Righteousness of God Is Revealed

Paul is eager to preach the gospel in Rome because it is the power of God for salvation to everyone who believes, for in it the righteousness of God is revealed from faith to faith. The wrath of God is also revealed against all who suppress the truth and exchange the glory of God for idols. God declares sinners righteous through faith in Christ, who was raised for their justification, so believers are not ashamed of the gospel and keep proclaiming it.

    Not Ashamed of the Gospel

Romans opens with Paul's longest greeting, introducing himself as a servant of Christ Jesus set apart for the gospel of God, promised beforehand in the Holy Scriptures. That gospel concerns God's Son, descended from David and declared to be the Son of God in power by his resurrection. Paul is not ashamed of the gospel, for it is the power of God for salvation to everyone who believes, to the Jew first and also to the Greek.
