    An Apostolic Benediction

Paul prepares for his third visit to Corinth and warns that he will not spare those who continue in sin, for Christ, crucified in weakness, lives by the power of God. He urges the church to examine themselves, to aim for restoration, and to live in peace. The letter closes with the blessing of the grace of the Lord Jesus Christ, the love of God, and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit, which builds the church up in unity as it waits for Christ.

    Some Foolish Boasting

Faced with false apostles who boasted of their credentials, Paul answers with a list of his own sufferings: imprisonments, beatings, shipwrecks, dangers, sleepless nights, hunger, and daily anxiety for all the churches. He even boasts of escaping Damascus in a basket let down through a window, the opposite of a soldier's glory as first over the wall. True ministry follows Christ in service and suffering, and the church stands firm in the faith when the world's messengers oppose it.

  3. 05/06/2018

    Betrothed to Christ

Paul tells the Corinthians that he feels a divine jealousy for them, for he betrothed them to one husband, to present them as a pure virgin to Christ. He fears that, as the serpent deceived Eve, their minds will be led astray from sincere devotion to Christ by those who preach another Jesus and a different gospel. Christ loved the church and gave himself up for her to sanctify her, and pastors and husbands follow that pattern, spending themselves for those in their care.

    God Loves a Cheerful Giver

Paul urges the Corinthians to complete the collection for the saints in Jerusalem that they had begun a year earlier. Whoever sows bountifully will reap bountifully, so each one gives as he has decided in his heart, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver. The grace of Christ, who became poor so that his people might become rich, moves believers to give joyfully and to show kindness and hospitality to one another.

    The Groanings of the Spirit

Paul knows that if the earthly tent of this body is torn down, believers have a building from God, a house not made with hands, eternal in the heavens. In this tent they groan, longing to be clothed with their heavenly dwelling, so that what is mortal may be swallowed up by life, and God has given the Spirit as a guarantee. Though his sufferings wore him down, Paul did not lose heart, and believers hear their own groanings as a cry for the age to come and the resurrection in Christ.

The Light of the Knowledge of the Glory of God

Having received this ministry by mercy, Paul does not lose heart, and he renounces craftiness and sets forth the truth plainly. The god of this world blinds unbelievers, but God, who said "Let light shine out of darkness," has shone in believers' hearts to give the light of the knowledge of his glory in the face of Jesus Christ. This treasure is held in jars of clay, and momentary affliction prepares an eternal weight of glory for those who look to the things unseen.

  7. 01/28/2018

A Fragrance of Christ to God

Paul wrote the Corinthians out of much affliction and anguish of heart, and he urges them to forgive and comfort the repentant brother so that Satan gains no advantage. God leads his servants in triumph in Christ and through them spreads the fragrance of the knowledge of him everywhere. The apostle's sufferings are a pleasing aroma to God because they smell like Christ's own offering, and the church bears its trials together, loving and forgiving one another.

  8. 01/14/2018

    In Holiness and Godly Sincerity

Some in Corinth accused Paul of fickleness because he changed his travel plans. Paul answers that he conducted himself in holiness and godly sincerity by the grace of God, and that his word was faithful as God is faithful, for all God's promises find their Yes in Christ. God establishes his people in Christ, anoints them, and seals them with his Spirit as a guarantee.
