Tightly Wound

Tightly Wound

I know how this sounds. Tightly Wound is a podcast for control freaks trying to loosen their grip without losing their taste. No granola, no performance, no conversion story. Just an honest, occasionally reluctant look at alternative healing, spirituality and wellness: what actually works, what doesn’t, and why letting go is so hard when you like being in control. Hosted by Andrea Bottiani, a brand and creative strategist with fifteen years in fashion and lifestyle (early days at Nasty Gal, her own brand, now her own consulting agency in Los Angeles). She reads the fine print on everything. She’s also spent the better part of a decade quietly doing the woo: hypnotherapy, somatic work, energy healing, readings. She’s not a convert and she’s not here to sell you crystals. She’s a type A, skeptical, very analytical person trying the spiritual stuff for real and reporting back. WHAT WE COVER Hypnotherapy and hypnosis. Somatic channeling and somatic healing. Human Design (yes, she’s a Projector). Reiki and energy healing. Sound healing and sound baths. Tarot, oracle cards, psychics and intuitive healers. QHHT and past life regression. Chakras, manifestation and nervous system regulation. Neuroaesthetics, design psychology and why a beautiful room can change your whole mood. SpiritualTok, AI manifestation apps, wellness trends, and who’s making money off of all of it. Some episodes go deep on one practice. Some bring in practitioners, healers and friends who know way more than she does. Some are smart, skeptical women describing how they got into the woo, where they still roll their eyes, and how far in they actually are. Every episode keeps one foot in the material world: taste, style, interiors, a good chair, the Celine sunglasses. The thesis of the show is that you don’t have to choose between your spiritual life and your material life. WHO IT’S FOR Millennial women healing in the dark. Smart, successful, busy women who’ve been doing the inner work quietly and mostly alone, with no one to talk it through with. Over thinkers, perfectionists, people with high functioning anxiety, and anyone curious about spirituality but allergic to the guru thing. If you’re spiritual but skeptical, if you’ve ever booked a reiki session and then researched the practitioner for an hour, or if you want to understand the science behind wellness before you believe it, this show is for you. WHAT YOU WON’T GET A neat takeaway. Healing isn’t linear and neither is this show. Expect open questions, return visits to things she hasn’t figured out, a skeptics corner, real research and studies when they exist, and an honest “ask me again in six months” when they don’t. Somatic Channeling, Explained by Someone Who Also Didn't Buy It

I know how this sounds. But this show exists because of a Zoom session with today's guest. Chelsea Bratches was a stylist, a vintage dealer and a creative director who thought channelers were charlatans. Then her business fell apart, the doctors couldn't find anything, and her sister handed her a practice called somatic channeling. Now she teaches it. I've done a few sessions with her as a certified control freak, and I had questions. In this episode: • Chelsea's life before, and the first experience she couldn't explain away (it involves a Hindu deity she'd never heard of) • Somatic channeling explained like she's talking to a CFO • What actually happens in a session, from involuntary movement to mudras • What she saw on her side of the camera during my sessions • How energy work happens over Zoom from 3,000 miles away (her Wi-Fi and Bluetooth theory) • Why it's not a one and done, and what to do if you want results by tomorrow • How to tell a legit practitioner from a fraud in a field with no licensing • Who it's not for, and why it can get worse before it gets better • Grounding the woo, and why neither of us had to burn our wardrobes • One thing to notice in your body this week Mentioned: TRE (Tension and Trauma Releasing Exercises), Ganesh, Reiki, QHHT (Quantum Healing Hypnosis Technique), hypnotherapy Find Chelsea: @chelseabratches on Instagram and TikTok, profoundhouse.com, and profoundhouse.substack.com. She offers one on one Learn Somatic Channeling sessions, tarot and intuitive readings, and The Jesus Transmissions, a monthly group verbal channeling event. Somatic channeling hasn't been clinically studied, and nothing in this episode is medical advice. Chelsea screens for contraindications including bipolar disorder, psychosis and schizophrenia. Keep your doctor in the loop. Next episode: Hypnotherapy, solo. Chelsea, this one's for you. Tuesday 11/10. New episodes every other Tuesday on YouTube, Spotify and Apple Podcasts. It's Not Vanity, It's Neurology (Probably)

I know how this sounds. But what if caring about beautiful things isn’t vanity, it’s neurology? On the first episode of Tightly Wound, Andrea Bottiani breaks down neuroaesthetics: the science of what happens in your brain when you experience something beautiful, whether that’s art, music, design, a room or a view. She learned the word in a conversation with her somatic channeling practitioner, and it felt like finally having a name for something she’d always known about herself: that her home, her outfits and her surroundings change her mood and how she sees her entire day. In this episode: What neuroaesthetics actually is, and who started the fieldThree studies that made her sit up: the brain’s “beauty spot,” the hospital window study, and why making art lowers cortisol even if you’re bad at itSkeptics corner: small studies, reverse inference, and the $400 lamp with “neuroaesthetic” on the boxWhether this is real science or just a very sophisticated permission slip to keep buying nice thingsThe distinction that changed everything for her: aesthetics as performance vs aesthetics as regulationHer questionable taste era (yes, the red bedroom)A small experiment for your nervous system, and why she’s doing it tooSomewhere between vindicated and suspicious of how vindicated she feels. Ask her again in six months. Research and reading mentioned Semir Zeki and Hideaki Kawabata, Neural Correlates of Beauty (2004)Roger Ulrich, View Through a Window May Influence Recovery from Surgery, Science (1984)Girija Kaimal et al., art making and cortisol levels (2016)Anjan Chatterjee, The Aesthetic BrainSusan Magsamen and Ivy Ross, Your Brain on ArtNext episode: meet Chelsea, the healer who gave her the word in the first place, and the somatic channeling session that started this whole show. Got a room, object or view that does something to you that you can’t explain? Send it to @tightlywoundpod on Instagram and TikTok. If you liked this episode, follow the show on Spotify or subscribe on YouTube. It helps more than you think.
