Chapter 1: Welcome Aboard the Solaris

A brand-new starship. A scientist who can't sit still. And a passenger he packed himself. Civilian scientist Dr. John Mack, an Altosian with a boy's excitement barely hidden behind a traveler's rumpled tunic, is shuttled by the unflappable Vulcan Lieutenant T'Pala to the U.S.S. Solaris, a sleek new ship waiting in the Planetia orbital shipyard. Mack has brought far more equipment than any guest should, and plans for all of it. Before the Solaris has even left her moorings, he has woken something in his quarters that no one aboard expected to meet. Then the whole shipyard lights up to send her off. Thirty-six hours out, Dr. John Mack's quarters have become a humming laboratory, and Sara, his holographic assistant, has some new ideas about how he should start his day. Before the tea is cool, Mack learns that the eccentric inventor of her holodeck grid left a few surprises in her programming, trades barbs with his bombastic rival Dr. Eris Vent, and is called before Captain Arzadon to explain a colleague who may not be all he seems. Chapter 3: A Message from Home

A black hole on the horizon. A stack of instruments to calibrate. And a crew that won't let a man keep a single secret. The Solaris holds station at the edge of the Wedge Wolf Black Hole, and Dr. John Mack and his holographic assistant Sara settle into a rhythm, measuring the universe one instrument at a time, until Sara does something that stops him cold. An invitation to the Captain's ready room promises an evening of gamesmanship, but first Mack has to survive a shower, a curious hologram, and Lieutenant T'Pala, who arrives with a story from a desert sunset long ago that he would much rather she didn't tell. Chapter 4: Card Night

Cards on the table. Stakes on the side table. And every stake comes with a story. Out of uniform for one night, the senior officers gather in the Captain's ready room for an evening of wagers, laughter and a few well-worn legends. But one keepsake on the table carries Dr. John Mack fifteen years back, to the lush world of Decca Breea, where a young Mack and a brash Ensign Arzadon let themselves be talked into a ride straight down the inside of a mountain. What waits at the bottom will follow both of them for the rest of their lives. EXOS ETHOS is a full-cast science-fiction audio drama, told chapter by chapter. Headphones recommended. Chapter 5: Sunset on Altos

The stakes keep coming. So do the surprises. Card night in the Captain's ready room rolls on, and every officer's keepsake brings a story to the table: a Vulcan escutcheon, a Holcha tree from Decca Breea, and a deck of cards that seems to have a mind of its own. Then Dr. Xiana unwraps her stake, and Dr. John Mack hears words he has heard once before, word for word. A single hand of poker turns into a contest of nerve, until the bridge interrupts with news that changes the shape of the mission. And when Mack finally walks away from the table, the door to his quarters opens onto somewhere he never expected to stand again. Chapter 6: The Concert Hall

Two stars. One last dance. And a ship that will not sit still. Dr. John Mack wakes at his table to music he didn't ask for, and to a simulation that shows him something so beautiful he could spend a lifetime watching it. But BNC74 is running out of time, the briefing can't wait, and the deck beneath Mack's feet keeps tilting in ways no one else seems to mind. Between a captain's warning, a doctor with a cure he refuses to take, an old rival in a very small turbolift, and a Vulcan who has her own way of getting his attention, the day keeps pushing back. Then Mack opens the door to his quarters, and finds an orchestra waiting for its conductor. EXOS ETHOS is a full-cast science-fiction audio drama, told chapter by chapter. Headphones recommended. Chapter 7: Warp Shell Failure

The music reaches its last great bar. Then the floor drops away. Dr. John Mack is pulled out of the most beautiful performance of his life and into the moment he has spent his career predicting. Out past the red giant, the dying star is finally letting go, and the Solaris is not where she is supposed to be. Alarms. Failing gravity. A captain who has run out of good options, a chief engineer wrestling with something far too dangerous to drop, and a bridge full of people waiting for an answer no one wants to give. Mack has a plan. It is brilliant, it is insane, and it is going to cost someone everything. And somewhere below decks, in a room full of glowing instruments, someone is waiting for him.
