Patience Akumu reflects on feminism and her Anglican wedding in Uganda

After two decades as a couple, with two children and a traditional union, Patience Akumu, an author, and her partner Mark participated in an Anglican ceremony in Uganda. They described the event as a tribute to love rather than a formal wedding, and personally distributed invitations that featured a lighthearted gif. However, some who received the invites raised concerns about whether the occasion undermined or upheld patriarchal norms. In her writing, Akumu reflects on how the decision highlighted conflicts among feminist ideals, African cultural identity, and Christian marital traditions. She explains that the ceremony was important to Mark, whose father served as a reverend. The officiant stated that submission did not equate to women's oppression and emphasized that marriage should be based on partnership, although he also suggested Akumu kneel before her husband from time to time. The essay notes that in 2023, Uganda’s Constitutional Court rejected a human rights advocate's case against religious marriage conditions, such as requiring parental consent for women and mandatory HIV testing for couples. Akumu concludes by questioning whether a traditional white wedding aligns with a feminist perspective or if it instead supports societal pressures on African women to marry and tolerate harmful relationships. https://dijitalsurmanset.com/en/can-an-african-feminist-have-a-white-wedding-its-complicated-patience-akumu-31558

Fake nuclear strike alert sent in cyberattack on Ukraine’s emergency app

A cyberattack on Ukraine’s emergency alert system transmitted a fake warning of an impending nuclear strike late Sunday. In Kyiv, many people didn’t react strongly, according to Ukrainian artist and writer Diana Berg. Citizens frequently turn to their preferred Telegram channels to monitor threats, having become accustomed to tracking missile activity in real time over the years. Berg explains that air-raid sirens and the restoration of electricity have now merged into daily life, despite ongoing Russian assaults and recurring power cuts. She notes that the city’s subdued streets also show the toll of war: under martial law, big gatherings in Kyiv are limited due to potential missile targets, and residents lack the stamina for sustained demonstrations. Berg notes that power interruptions have increased from four to six hours and now include sudden emergency blackouts. People stockpile water, fill their car fuel tanks, and conserve battery life in preparation. Russian attacks and falling shrapnel have sparked city fires; a drone recently struck a high-rise near her residence, killing a neighbor. When the electricity is restored, families quickly plug in appliances, occasionally causing overloads at nearby substations. In extended outages and during cold snaps, Kyiv sets up warming tents where residents can charge their devices and find some warmth. Berg recounts working through the blackouts, returning to her laptop after exercising, as an air-raid siren blares outside. Her phone shows a yellow alert, but she continues with her tasks. https://dijitalsurmanset.com/en/in-kyiv-hackers-sent-fake-alerts-about-a-nuclear-apocalypse-we-hardly-noticed-diana-berg-31608

Chainalysis says hacker accessed customer names and email addresses

Blockchain analysis company Chainalysis reported that a hacker employing what it described as “offensive agentic techniques” infiltrated its systems and internal tools this month. The intruder gained access to certain customer data, such as user IDs, full names, email addresses, and organizational role labels. Chainalysis stated it has found no indication so far that investigation content, transaction or query results, plain-text passwords, multi-factor authentication secrets, or session tokens were accessed. The firm did not disclose the number of affected customers or when it detected the breach. Chainalysis has announced that it has brought in external cybersecurity specialists and is using large language models to assist with a security assessment. It also states that the incident is not connected to the separate theft at Binance. The company puts the amount stolen at six billion four hundred million dollars, noting that thousands of transactions occurring over a brief timeframe suggest the attackers are using automation to hide the money's trail. Chainalysis adds that the hackers have made use of lending protocols on the Tron network to avoid stablecoin freezes. It reports that stablecoin firms like Circle and Tether have frozen approximately two billion eight hundred million dollars in stablecoins. https://dijitalsurmanset.com/en/chainalysis-says-hacker-using-offensive-agentic-techniques-accessed-its-customers-names-and-emails-31418

Claire Ainsley urges the center-left to restore people’s sense of control

Political advisor Claire Ainsley argues in her new book, Control: How We Lost It and How to Take It Back, that centre-left parties need to restore people’s sense of control over their lives. She says governments should show they can respond to fast-moving threats, including artificial intelligence, while giving people more opportunity to shape their own futures. Ainsley, who served as Keir Starmer’s policy director in opposition, says weak leadership can leave voters open to populist answers. She argues that politicians have lost some of the means to deliver on their promises, leading voters to lose faith. Ainsley says her interest in the subject grew from research with people in poverty, who described areas of life they felt unable to control. She also points to economic insecurity and young people’s mental health, saying screens alone do not explain teenagers’ difficulties and that adults should consider the effects of the pandemic. Her proposals include tax breaks for training, welfare reform to encourage work, and giving people more responsibility for their health. She also says Britain should control who enters and stays, while keeping a path to permanent settlement for legal migrants. Ainsley believes Andy Burnham has made a strong start, but says Labour MPs must support him. https://dijitalsurmanset.com/en/the-world-is-out-of-control-how-political-strategist-claire-ainsley-is-challenging-the-left-to-take-it-back-31474
