The Mooroolbark Community Garden - Anita Morgan

Anita Morgan joins us to chat about the ways in which the Mooroolbark Community Garden, founded in 2023 with the support of both Local and State governments, has opened itself to connections with diverse community groups, including the adjacent kindergarten, the local Burmese community and Mooroolbark Food Relief. Anita represents the Garden at the Community Garden Network, linking similar gardens in the Yarra Ranges to share ideas and experience. The Garden has no fences, encouraging local people to enjoy the produce. There is a system of signs indicating which crops are ripe for picking.https://www.mooroolbarkcg.org/Local Food Connections thanks Formidable Vegetable for their song You are what you eat

Aiv Puglielli MLC - State-run Supermarkets

Aiv Puglielli is a member of the Victorian Legislative Assembly representing the North-Eastern Metropolitan Region. He is the Greens Economic Justice & Consumer Rights spokesperson and joined Local Food Connections to chat about the Party's policy of having state owned supermarkets. Aiv explains that the intention is to break the duopoly of Coles and Woolworths, make essential groceries more affordable for people, and open up possibilities to shorten supply chains by sourcing food more locally.Local Food Connections thanks Formidable Vegetable for their song You are what you eat

    Lisa Redmond - Lemonshare

Lisa Redmond is the founder of Lemonshare, an on-line platform for sharing homegrown food, reducing waste and connecting neighbours. '...across Australia, millions of people grow fruit, vegetables and herbs at home. Much of this produce is grown with care, without pesticides or chemical sprays, but when there is no easy way to share that surplus, perfectly good food is left to rot, composted, or thrown away.''The current food system is highly efficient at moving large volumes of produce through supermarkets, but it struggles with small, local surpluses. A lemon tree, a productive zucchini plant, or a backyard herb garden does not fit neatly into commercial supply chains'.Sign up here to begin sharing your surplus finding locally grown food and connecting with other backyard growers:  https://lemonshare.com.au/Local Food Connections thanks Formidable Vegetable for their song You are what you eat

Marina Bistrin - Edible and medicinal weed workshops

Marina Bistrin runs classes in identifying and using edible and medicinal weeds. She has gardened in rental properties in different parts of Melbourne, including at her current home in Macleod. Marina describes her gardening as experimental. She doesn't mind 'messinness' as she interacts with the plants, allowing them to go through their life cycles and building soil with the compost she makes.https://localfoodconnect.org.au/community-gardening/dealing-with-your-green-bins-weeds/Marina will be running a Using your weeds workshop on Sunday 18 October 26, 10.00-12.30. Lillie Giang - Feed One Feed All

When storms hit the Dandenong Ranges in 2021, knocking down huge trees that blocked roads and leaving residents of suburbs like Olinda stranded and without power, Lillie Giang asked herself how she could help. As a trained chef, she decided to cook hot food for people in need during the emergency. Since then, she has grown a much bigger enterprise, Feed One Feed All, that provides nutritious food to people in the community facing food insecurity for whatever reason. Lillie will be appearing on the main stage at the up-coming Zero Waste Festival in Frugal Foodies: the Zero Waste Mystery Box Cook-Off demonstrating an important skill that Lillie teaches: cooking with whatever food you've got.https://zerowastevictoria.org.au/zero-waste-festival/festival-speakers/Local food Connections thanks Formidable Vegetable for their song You are what you eat

    Fuchsia McVilly - Permaculture

Fuchsia lives in Benalla. She is a permaculture enthusiast who has shared gardening and composting tips in Renew magazine and has recently begun writing about permaculture for the Local Food Connect newsletter.https://localfoodconnect.org.au/community-gardening/permaculture-fuchsia/#2Fuchsia is currently studying horticulture at Charles Sturt University. She oulines one of her permaculture approaches this way:...instead of looking at different crops as individuals, I started thinking more about how they interact with each other. How they’re planted in relation to each other, how one plant will shade another, or where one will provide extra nutrients for a hungry neighbour, or how one can scramble up another for support. Local food Connections thanks Formidable Vegetable for their song You are what you eat.

    The Local Food Report

The Local Food Report is an episode of Local Food Connections in which, instead of interviewing a guest, Ann reports on anything about permaculture or local food that interests her. The topic of this episode is, broadly, wild edible food and in particular how to cook two highly nutritious greens, molokhia and common mallow. There's also info about edible weed events you can sign up for. Here's a link to the Local food Connect newsletter which lists them in the events section: https://localfoodconnect.org.au/ Local Food Connections thanks Formidable Vegetable for their song You are what you eat.
