Thanks for checking out One Track Mind, where I sit down with fellow songwriters and close friends to peek under the hood of their creative process, discuss their biggest influences, and break down the art of songcraft. This time, i'm joined by longtime friend and fellow pub quiz aficionado Ryan Crick, guitarist and driving force behind Nottingham emo band Pillow Fort. I first came across Pillow Fort through the UK DIY Emo Discord server and was instantly hooked on their mix of heartfelt, anthemic melodies and intricate, twinkly riffs. Since then they've shared stages with the likes of Fresh and Michael Cera Palin, and we've even played a few shows together along the way.Ry and I dig into the songwriting behind Pillow Fort's new record, "Indefinite, but not Forever", out now. The band are hitting the road for a full UK tour in support, with a launch show at JT Soar in Nottingham on October 24th. Don't miss it! In this inaugural episode, I'm joined by the incredibly talented Adam Kirkup. After hearing his music for the first time, my immediate thought was "I need to play gigs with this man"— and we’re doing just that with a run of shows together later this month in Nottingham and Chester! We dive deep into Adam's unique approach to lyricism - from capturing quiet, everyday moments like a late-night glass of wine after putting the kids to bed, to detailing the harsh realities of the musician's grind on his new track Amateur, Baby ("Driving 95 miles for a six-ticket show"). Plus, Adam shares the beautiful story behind his song 'Mercy'. In this episode, we discuss: Adam’s early days throwing shoes on stage in a punk bandKey songwriting influences, including Bright Eyes and Joanna NewsomHis family’s undying love for Donny OsmondThe undisputed greatness of Rington's Chocolate Brazil Nut Biscuits If you enjoyed the conversation, please like, subscribe, and drop a comment below with your favourite biscuit!
